Former Prime Minister of Poland and current Chairman of the European Council Donald Tusk is in growing conflict with the authorities of his country. However, in addition to the “high” political motives may have a Tusk there are quite mundane tasks. After a few months, ends his term of office. Whether Tusk keep European post contrary to the position of Warsaw?
Stretching for more than a year the conflict between Poland and Europe received a new, somewhat unexpected twist, and directly affecting one of the highest posts in the European Union. In the public field with a Bang erupted controversy between the ruling forces of Poland and the President of the European Council Donald Tusk in the recent past, the Polish Prime Minister.
“If you look at the situation from the point of view of traditions, the chances for a second term on a post of the President of the European Council for Tusk look pretty ghostly”
At the end of 2016, the country was a parliamentary crisis. The opposition accused the ruling party “law and justice” undermining the constitutional foundations, the tightening of censorship and the infringement of interests of the inhabitants of the country. In fact, it is the reverse side of the claims, which makes the Polish authorities of the EU: the policy of authoritarianism, suppression of the rights and freedoms of citizens, the restriction of democracy in the country.
The protests of opposition deputies in the Sejm (in particular, blocking the rostrum) continued until January 11. However, even after the termination was announced of the new shares, as the opposition considers illegal legislative acts adopted by the ruling majority.
Donald Tusk actually supported the opposition during the December protests, urging the government and opposition of Poland to respect the people and the norms of the Constitution and morality. For him the number and other harsh statements in the address the Polish ruling forces, for example, that hostility to the EU purchased in Poland “state dimension”.
Oils in fire has added a new comment of the head of the European Council that “everyone is watching what is happening in the Polish Parliament, with concern and misunderstanding”. In addition, Tusk expressed the opinion that the resolution of the crisis should deal primarily power.
Response of the Polish authorities was not slow in coming. The Minister of foreign Affairs of Poland Witold Waszczykowski troubled by the fact that Donald Tusk “brazenly” calls on the international community to pursue policies against their own country, and called it “an unprecedented thing”.
Without a doubt, the contradictions between the head of the European Council and the Polish authorities was long overdue. However, this conflict is a curious fact that takes place at a critical time for the political career of Donald Tusk moment.
Former Polish Prime Minister was ranked one of the top European posts December 1, 2014. The duration of the tenure of the head of the European Council is 2.5 years. Thus, the term Tusk will expire in less than six months.
If you look at the situation from the point of view of tradition, the prospects for a second term in office for Tusk look pretty bleak.
In any case, in December last year the leader of the ruling party “law and justice” Jaroslaw Kaczynski said bluntly that will not support the candidacy of the Tusk at re-election for the presidency of the European Council. He stressed that the tradition of his election without the support of the authorities of the country does not exist.
However, the Polish authorities suggest that it is possible and other developments. In his harsh comments about Tusk Witold Waszczykowski made that can be used and some non-standard procedures to safeguard the former Prime Minister his current role for a second term: “If he wants to remain in this position, you will implement it some international maneuvers”.
The assumption doesn’t look supernatural, since in its rhetoric, Donald Tusk stressed complementary in relation to the two main European powers – Berlin and Paris. And distrust of the Polish authorities to Germany and damage them against France, he sees “serious problem” of Poland.
All the circumstances and the situation really looks like a Tusk trying to stay on a post of the head of the European Council for a second term without the support of the Polish authorities, with the assistance of the major European heavyweights Berlin and Paris.
Whether it is – a trivial question, because in both countries the political situation is not very simple, plus this year there also will be elections, which are already considered as crucial. Whether ready-Merkel and Hollande to distract from domestic problems only in order to break the existing European rules for one of the European bureaucrats? Wouldn’t it be easier for them to find a less problematic candidate? Or the desire to put “rebellious” Poland “in place” would be a serious enough motive to keep Tusk at the head of the European Council for a second term contrary to the opinion of Warsaw?
On the other hand, even if Tusk will not work to save the post for a second term, he will likely find a sinecure in some other international structure. Given the serious claims against him (including criminal prosecution) the Polish authorities, his current position is in opposition to the Polish authorities and stressed the Pro-European – that looks quite adequate to his circumstances, both political and personal.
