Russia is not re-elected in the new composition of the UNHRC

Russia was left without representation in the Council on human rights of the UN. Victory during voting at the UN General Assembly was won by Hungary and Croatia. Last ahead of Russia only two votes. We will remind that in the beginning of this week the scandal broke, when all the major human rights organizations demanded to expel Russia from the UNHRC because of the situation in Aleppo.

The new composition of the UN Council on human rights will include representatives of Russia. So sensationally ended on Friday a vote in the group from Eastern Europe.

According to “Interfax”, Russia voted 112 countries, while the victory went to Hungary, which received 144 votes, and Croatia with 114 votes.

Only the UN General Assembly on Friday elected 14 new members to the UNHRC in 2017-2019.

Earlier, more than 80 human rights and humanitarian organizations, including Human Rights Watch and Care International, has demanded to exclude Russia from the UN Council on human rights (HRC) because of the situation in Syria.

On Tuesday 25 October, the press Secretary of the President of Russia Dmitry Peskov, commenting on this demand, said these organizations should actively behave, given the atrocities that have several years of throwing in Syria are terrorists.
