Japan has denied the rumors about joint with Russia the control of the Kuril Islands

The Ministry of foreign Affairs of Japan said that the joint management of the South Kuril Islands is not discussed.

In the message of the diplomatic corps stated that Tokyo does not discuss such a move, reports TASS.

Earlier, Japanese newspaper Nihon Keizai reported that the authorities are thinking about the possibility to offer Russia joint control of the southern Kuril Islands. Journalists also said that Prime Minister Shinzo Abe intends to offer this option during a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in December, and Russia, in turn, partly in the course of this proposal.

“The fact that Japan is negotiating with Russia about this, is not true. The position of Japan, which involves the issue of the ownership of the four Islands and conclude a peace Treaty, remains unchanged,” – noted in the Ministry of foreign Affairs of Japan.

Southern Kuriles – Iturup, Kunashir, Shikotan and Habomai – were part of the USSR at the end of the Second world war. The Japanese authorities still call them the “Northern territories” and insist on the transfer of the Islands land of the Rising sun and the conclusion of a peace Treaty with Russia. Russia has repeatedly voiced its position on this issue, according to which Russian sovereignty over the Islands cannot be questioned.
