Ukrainian MPs want a rapprochement with Russia

The number of MPs in the Verkhovna Rada announced the establishment of a unit for establishing trade and economic ties with Russia. This was announced by MP Yakov Bezbakh. The parliamentary group plans to start collecting signatures under the appeal to the President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko with a call to make a step towards economic growth of Ukraine and to cancel all mutual sanctions with Russia.

To comment on the initiative, we asked a political analyst at the international monitoring organization CIS-EMO, publicist Stanislav Olegovich of Bychok.

A year ago such statements and initiatives simply would not have been possible in the Verkhovna Rada. Deputies immediately be accused of separatism, in the Kremlin, and so forth, – says Stanislav Bychok. – Now the situation is gradually improving. Some political experts are less anti-Russian, less bellicose statements. The same ATO is now less and less support as the population and political structure of Ukraine. More and more talk about the world. In the Ukrainian society develops a greater understanding that European integration is postponed indefinitely, and the Russian side, and it is necessary to restore the relationship.

The same applies to a large exporting business. Take the same limits under the agreement on Association of Ukraine with the EU. For Ukrainian goods on European markets they are very, very limited. And literally ended, if I am not mistaken, in the first two months of this year — January and February. And the goods remain. In the Ukrainian media is still anti-Russian rhetoric, but as they say, something you want to eat.

I think that in the future more politicians will talk about the need for the normalization of relations with Russia, and, respectively, Donetsk and Lugansk too.

More skeptical Ukrainian political scientist, Director of the Kiev center of political researches and conflictology Mikhail Borisovich Pogrebinsky:

– I don’t think this group may have a decisive influence on the Ukrainian Parliament, unfortunately. First, it is quite rare. And I doubt that she will actively promote this initiative. The one who declares the need to establish economic ties with Russia, needs protection. The Ukrainian government has a monopoly on violence. The person who makes such an initiative, can now announce a traitor, an agent of Putin and no one can protect him. But, in any case, it is good that such a group already there.
