In Russia to launch contactless payments on smartphones

Sberbank announced the launch in Russia of the service of contactless payments Apple Pay service which will benefit the owners of Mastercard and smartphone. By the end of the year Sberbank intends to equip the technology, all they serve outlets – over 600 thousand. However, experts do not think that the new payment method will become popular, besides warning you about his insecurity.

The choice in favor of Apple Pay – the product of the same American Corporation – Deputy Chairman of Sberbank Alexander Torbakhov explained that the system “becomes a driver of the proliferation of contactless payments in Russia and in the world.”

“When we two years ago learned that Apple launched this technology, for us there was no doubt – this is exactly what we need”

“In the savings Bank a few years working hard to bring this happy future away from all these manifestations of the physical world, said Torbakhov. – When we two years ago learned that Apple launched this technology, for us there was no doubt – this is exactly what we need.”

Promise safety

In a press release Sberbank reported that the technology Apple Pay is completely safe for clients:

“Apple Pay security and privacy. Secure payments using Apple Pay provides a platform Mastercard Digital Enablement Service (MDES), which uses the most advanced payment technology – EMV, tokenization, cryptography and biometrics that ensures complete anonymity and the safety of cardholder data.

When the client of the savings Bank adds Apple Pay credit or debit card Mastercard, card number is not stored on the device nor on Apple servers. Instead, it is assigned a unique number, device account, which is encrypted and securely stored in the Secure Element chip of the device.

Just a toy

Independent banking expert Paul Sakadynsky convinced that the introduced technology is nothing more than a “toy” and the dangers to a potential user is not responsible, however, with reservations.

“We forget that in addition to Apple Pay in Russia from this month and introduced system Samsung Pay. Both that and another – the usual “toys”, whose functionality lies in the fact that the owners of these phones will be able to make payments, bringing them to the terminals.

I don’t think that this technology can become a breeding ground for cyberhawks because they do not believe that it will capture the broad masses of Russians. In the end, we have calculations using the same Bank card carries no more than 10-15% of the population”, – said the expert.

“On the other hand, to say anything while the system is under implementation yet. If you remember the initial experience of implementing the same Bank card, who then could assume, that there will be a method of fraud, as scrimming” when you’re sitting in a restaurant, give the waiter your card to pay, and he removes from it all the personal information to make a copy? So far as the system is really safe, shows experience of its implementation,” said Sakadynsky.

Indeed, almost in parallel with Apple Pay in Russia went and technology Samsung Pay, which propels itself by a Korean company and its partners are Alfa-Bank, VTB 24, MTS-Bank, Bank “Russian Standard”, “Yandex”. According to information published on the website of the Russian representative office of Samsung, the service is also available to owners of MasterCard and the owners of phones Samsung Galaxy S7 edge|S7, Samsung Galaxy A5 (2016)/A7(2016), Samsung Galaxy note 5 case and Samsung Galaxy S6 edge.

Non-sovereign system

At the same time, doctor of economic Sciences, Professor of Kazan Federal University and the rector of the Tatar Academy of management Ildar Ablaev sees the vulnerability of the Russian users of technology Apple Pay in light of the growing geopolitical confrontation between Russia and the United States.

“On the one hand, it is quite convenient innovation, the advantages which I, for example, as a person who uses six iPhones, can fully appreciate. But here, against the background of world events, should, in the first place, to attend to the issues of information security, they should be in the first place, and personal comfort on the second.

If Apple Pay – American technology, then, of course, all transactions are tracked in the United States. Remember back in 2014, after the Crimean events, Russia threatened to block Visa and Mastercard out of the desire to paralyze the existing system of payments? I believe, even then, should attend to create their own, independent systems, including contactless payments,” – said the expert.

Nevertheless, despite the geopolitical tensions and related risks of the Russian banks, in particular Sberbank, continue to focus on American technology, particularly Apple Pay.

How to set

In a press release, the Bank indicated that the payment with Apple Pay, you can configure the mobile application “Sberbank Online”, and execute payments with its help, holders will be able to iPhone SE the iPhone 6 and more new models and Apple Watch.

“Apple Pay makes it easy for you to make purchases in apps and on websites with one finger tap to the Touch ID, no longer need to manually fill out lengthy documents with contact data or re-enter delivery information and billing information, – said the press service of the Bank. – When paying for purchases in apps or in Safari, Apple Pay works on iPhone 6 and newer models, iPad Pro, iPad Air 2, iPad mini 3 and more new models.”

To use Apple Pay is also possible in Safari on any Mac older than 2012 release installed on the computer system macOS Sierra, while confirming the payment from your iPhone 6 or later model, or from Apple Watch.
