One of the most discussed space missions recently completed. Research probe “Rosetta” after completing his last maneuver, crashed into the comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko, joining his “brother” FILA. Scientists have yet one year to process the information obtained by means of the probe, however, to send new signals to the Ground it was not destined.
In his latest peak of the probe was released yesterday at 22:50 Moscow time. How is the landing of Rosetta, participants had the opportunity to watch live. Confirmation of the success was the fact that the signal from the spacecraft came to an abrupt end.
The decision to plant a probe on a comet was made by the specialists of the European space Agency due to the fact that the comet Churyumov-Gerasimenko is removed from the Sun, feeding batteries of the spacecraft and attempt to translate it into “sleep mode” (as was already done in 2011) would be too risky — aging probe could from him not to go. Landing on a comet, though hardly mild, in any case, you know exactly where the space probe is now. Moreover, even in the last hours of his work Rosetta continued to benefit science, making images of the comet high-resolution more close range and sending them to the Ground. In General, as one of ESA’s Matt Taylor, Rosetta ended his career as it should be the rock star of the 60-ies — finale with no intention one day to return to the stage.
“Rosetta” with a research probe Philae was launched to the comet March 2, 2004. The journey took her about ten years. The mission was the first of its kind, and in the course of it were made the first soft landing of descent of the probe on the comet surface (we are talking about “Fily”). Also, scientists were able to collect a lot of information about the comet — in particular, scientists have found that it is, in all probability, is the age of the solar system, and also got a lot of data about its chemical composition.
