Egypt received the second “Mistral”, once destined for Russia


Naval forces of Egypt gave a second amphibious ship type “Mistral” “Anwar Sadat”, originally built for the Russian Navy. The first ship of this type (“Gamal Abdel Nasser”), the Egyptians got this summer.

“It was a difficult period of uncertainty, but thanks to the support of the French government, we were able to find a customer for these ships”, – quotes Reuters the representative of the company DCNS, to build both ships.

Initially, the helicopter was built for the Russian Navy, but after the start of the crisis in Ukraine, the French government refused to send the court of Moscow. Later, Paris returned to the Russian authorities paid for the ships money.

Later interest in the helicopter showed Egypt. In October 2015, Paris and Cairo have signed a contract worth 950 million euros.

Also the Egyptian authorities have started talks on buying Russian helicopters, which had to equip the “Mistral”.
