The threat to the West not to recognize the elections in the state Duma consequences

The United States confirmed the unwillingness to recognize the State Duma elections, which will be including in the Crimea. Washington and the EU went to meet the request of Poroshenko. Moreover – the President of Ukraine demanded from the West not to recognize the results of elections to the state Duma as a whole across Russia. Whether or not enforced by this threat?

New US Ambassador to Ukraine, Marie Yovanovitch once again outlined the principled position of his country on the issue of Crimea, saying that the States do not recognize the elections to the State Duma on the Peninsula.

“Elections in the Crimea do not recognize neither the US nor Europe

“Once again lead the American position that the Crimea is and will forever remain a part of Ukraine, despite all the possible legal actions by the Russian Federation. We will never recognize Crimea as part of Russia. We also do not recognize Duma elections, which take place on the territory of the Crimea”, – quotes the Ambassador RIA “Novosti”.

The day before in a similar spirit expressed by the Minister of foreign Affairs of Germany Frank-Walter Steinmeier and his French counterpart Jean-Marc Ayrault, who is on a visit in Ukraine. “Concerning the second question, about the legitimacy of the elections to the Duma in Crimea was said to my colleague Eero: we do not recognize and will not recognize the annexation of Crimea,” Steinmeier was quoted by the Agency “Interfax-Ukraine”. The head of the German foreign Ministry also reminded that during the elections to the lower house of the Russian Parliament on the Peninsula will not OSCE observers.

In Kiev stated that the way the head of the French and German diplomacy has granted the request of the President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko, the latest during the meeting with Steinmeier and Ayrault urged “not to recognize the legitimacy of the parliamentary elections in Russia that you plan to spend in the occupied Ukrainian Crimea.”

Informed of the requirement to cancel elections in “occupied” Crimea sounded exclusively from Kiev.

“Elections are illegal, for observers of criminal liability”

Recall that on Monday morning, Moscow received from the Ukrainian authorities an official note about the impossibility of holding in Ukraine the elections to the state Duma. On the same day the President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko has held a meeting with ambassadors of the G7 countries and the European Union and urged them not to recognize the elections in the state Duma of Russia on the territory of Crimea.

In addition, the press Secretary of the Ukrainian foreign Ministry Marian Betz gave me an ultimatum, according to which Russia should cancel the elections in Crimea and to exclude from the Federal list of candidates nominated by parties, regional groups which cover the Peninsula.

The permanent representative of Ukraine to the United Nations Volodymyr Yelchenko has threatened criminal prosecution of observers who will work at the elections in Crimea. “Elections to the state Duma of Russia in the Crimea illegal, to observers of criminal liability”, – the politician said in his Twitter.

Earlier the MFA of Russia declared that the Crimea “is an integral part of Russia, and the decision on the holding of elections there is the exclusive prerogative of the Russian Federation”.

The non-recognition of individual deputies

Scientific Director of the Valdai discussion club”, the chief editor of the magazine “Russia in global politics” Fyodor Lukyanov am sure that the elections in Crimea do not recognize neither the US nor Europe because “none of them recognizes the affiliation of Crimea to Russia.” However, the analyst doubts that this will not be recognized by election to the state Duma as a whole. Otherwise, no interaction with an elected legislature as a whole.

“Probably will be made some statements, but the legal consequences will not have, because right now, I think, to go to a full-scale conflict with the exception only of parliamentary cooperation unnecessary. But conversations will. And surely there will be countries, such as PACE or the OSCE parliamentary Assembly, who will insist that the Russian delegation had no right to participate in it. But more than talk is not going,” said Lukyanov newspaper VIEW.

“Not paying attention to the discrepancies”

With Lukyanov agreed by the Director of the Center for Eurasian studies Vladimir Kornilov. He is convinced that this attitude of the West to the election will last until until it does not recognize the Crimea a part of Russia.

“We see that Ukrainian politicians and political analysts urged the West not to recognize the elections in Russia as such and does not recognize the legitimacy of the next state Duma. But the West will not do,” said Kornilov the newspaper VIEW, explaining that the end of the parliamentary cooperation will mean the termination of cooperation with Russia in General.

According to him, the deputies elected from the Crimea, “will not constitute the overwhelming majority of the state Duma, and, consequently, on the overall outcome of the election is not affected”.

“Russia needs clear without unnecessary hysterics to say to the West that territorial conflicts exist in many countries, but this does not entail the freezing of relations. Consequently, the Crimean question can be learned while that of the brackets. The West simply needs to recognize that this issue has been resolved for centuries, and to build a relationship on, not paying attention to the discrepancies”, says Kornilov.
