In those days in another part of Russia, on border land, on the road from Pskov to the Estonian border, in ancient Izborsk, near the cross of the Prince Truvor, one of three legendary brothers-Vikings, called to rule over Russia, there is a memorial stone to the artist, our contemporary, Pyotr Ossovsky, a year ago, completed his life journey on this earth and is buried here.

The works of Peter Ossovsky stretched in a large temporary space. A recognized classic of Russian art of the twentieth century, one of the founders of “severe style” broke into the artistic life in the mid-50s participated in youth exhibitions. He sought to depict life without embellishment, schmaltz and false sentimentality. The work on the scenic cycle, and it was a characteristic feature of the creative method of the artist, manifested his constant desire as deeply as possible to understand the collected material. So it was with the well-known series, written after a trip to revolutionary Cuba and Mexico where he, along with his friend and colleague Viktor Ivanov went in 1961, and on arrival reported a fine exhibition in the State Pushkin Museum, which at that time was a significant event in the cultural life of the country.

Creative trip to Russia, trips abroad – Italy, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Slovakia…Pyotr Ossovsky about himself said, “I’m an artist not a curious and inquisitive…”. Yes, curiosity as curiosity, passion, sincerity. History, culture, people, events, spaces, earth, sky — that is what characterizes his work. He sought his own path, his own theme, language, in tune with the era and found them thanks to the Pskov region. His painting makes you think, it is inherent in the idea of a spiritual meaning. And when we say “Ossowski”, in the mind immediately arises Pskov. “Thanks to the Pskov and its people, I’ve come to a special understanding of Russian traditions and culture,” he said. The Northern barrier land was not only a source of inspiration, she became his life. And this is not just another creative trip.

Pyotr Ossovsky got in the Pskov region half a century ago — fifty years of ninety-lived, this land was given the wizard power, and allowed to think, to live and work. It seems that the land of Pskov itself has chosen him and allowed myself to praise. And he was loyal and grateful to the end of his days. Heroes of his paintings is “the land and the people living on it” — so the master himself had identified one of the main guides of their creative search. His brush he praised and glorified their hard work and harsh life, beauty and eternity.

The artist managed to tell the world: “the Fishermen of lake Pskov” exhibited in the State Tretyakov gallery, the painting “Pskov Smiths” — the State Russian Museum, the polyptych of the “Mother” is one of the gems of the exposition of the Museum of Russian art in Minneapolis tonight (USA). And how many of Pskov landscapes and portraits in museums, in private collections in Russia and abroad, this work, which has already become history and took the honored place in the history of world art.

A sense of gratitude, love and pride to their spiritual home (this is determined by the artist this land became an incentive to be at the origins of the Union of artists of Pskov, for opportunities to actively support their colleagues and fellow Vsevolod Smirnov, Boris Skobeltsyn , Mikhail Semenov, and many others, make friends with the art school, where to this day there is a prize in his name, presented annually to the best student, and, most importantly, to donate to Pskov a series of his paintings which occupy a worthy place in the exposition of the Pskov Museum-reserve and open halls of his “pushkiniada” in Pushkin mountains. Pskov responded with kindness and respect, giving to the master in 2008, the title of “Honorary citizen of the city of Pskov.

“I am an artist sovereign” — proud of it — “Yes! And now I say: I’m a man of the sovereign! I have a sovereign love.” How can you not quote the unique Russian philosopher Ivan Ilyin, thinking that there is no single, all people have the same way of the country, he wrote: “Patriotism can live and will live only in the soul for which there is on earth something sacred; which is a living experience (may not be quite “irrational”) experienced a objective and absolute dignity of this sacred and recognized him in the shrines of his people. In other words, it means to join your life with his life and his destiny with his destiny, and this requires that the instinct of man has gained spiritual depth and gift of spiritual love.”

For a long time the artist did not give a sense that he owes to his native and beloved land, and when in connection with the celebration of the 1150th anniversary of Izborsk and the birth of Russian Statehood, the idea of “Izborsk chamber of Russian literature and Orthodox faith”, he writes: “My ardent desire to give pskovians what they gave me — has come true. This document with the autograph is still preserved in the archives of the Izborsk Museum-reserve.

Life inspires the artist but not every artist is able to return to it and become part of this life. Pskov-Izborsk land is inseparable from the creativity of this great master of Russian realist painting, and his paintings are part of Russian culture and the world of fine art.

A worthy conclusion to the ways of the Creator, who devoted more than half of his long and interesting life of the Pskov region, there was a proposal of the local authorities to bring his body to the ground here.
