The earth passed the asteroid that almost hit satellites


With an asteroid in 2016 RB1, larger than the Chelyabinsk meteorite, happily missed our planet on Wednesday evening at 20.20 Moscow time. He passed very close to Earth, at a distance of 40.5 thousand kilometers, or 0.1 of the distance to the moon).

As explained “MK” in the Institute of astronomy, asteroid discovered by American scientists from the Observatory, located in Arizona. The body diameter of 10 to 20 meters (for comparison, the Chelyabinsk meteorite was made in the diameter of 15-17 meters) marched past our planet at a speed of 8.13 km / sec., narrowly missing the man-made geostationary satellites, located at an altitude of 36 thousand kilometers. The asteroid can be observed in the southern hemisphere.

The asteroid belongs to the group of Atanov (one of the groups of asteroids approaching with the Earth). The orbits of these asteroids is not as stable as the bodies in the main belt, they are relatively quick to change under the influence of gravitational fields of Jupiter, and sometimes of the Earth itself. Atonce often fly into our orbit and can create a real threat of collision with the planet.
