It is believed that today’s Teens are eating more junk food and lead a less active lifestyle, which is why many of them suffer from excess weight. A new study conducted by experts from Exeter University, showed that these factors are indeed very important, but the key are not. The main cause of obesity among adolescents was the fact that during puberty the child’s body spends fewer calories at rest.
The researchers emphasize that not all the energy in the diet, a person consumes certain actions requiring the application of force. Most of this energy goes to support the natural processes occurring in the body continuously — the brain, heart, liver, kidneys and so on. This applies in particular to the “growing of organisms” — children.
At the same time, as the researchers found that during puberty, the body of a teenager begins to consume less energy, and his appetite remains at the same level. After some time, the body begins to burn a lot of calories, but the time spent is little, can affect the child’s weight.
Within ten years, scientists have observed for 279 children and adolescents. As it turned out, with the onset of puberty, their body began to require less energy. With 10 to 15 years, the level of consumption at rest was reduced by about a quarter, an average of 500 calories a day. As explained by researchers, this difference can be compared to the failure from daily intense exercise lasting about an hour. While 16 years, the number of calories you burn once again began to increase.
However, scientists are urged not to consider the natural physiological changes the only cause of obesity among adolescents. The research assistants made sure that modern Teens really do not pay enough attention to physical exercise, while not abusing the most useful food.
