Agreement on arms control in Europe can be based on proposals put forward by the Russian side. This was stated by Chairman of the Federation Council Committee on international Affairs Konstantin Kosachev.
The reason for this statement is the recent proposal of German foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier to conclude a new agreement on arms control in Europe, to exclude the possibility of starting a new arms race between Russia and NATO. He expressed this idea in an article for the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung.
“When one of the leading European politicians being cautious, I suppose, we have the sense not to react less specifically. To consider a range of initiatives which could become the basis for the fundamental agreements in the area of security and arms control”, — quotes the newspaper “Izvestia” the words of Kosachev.
