Latvia and Lithuania plan to increase defence spending


On Tuesday, August 23, Vice President Joe Biden met with the presidents of Latvia and Lithuania. Following the meeting, the White house announced the intention of the Baltic States to fulfil the commitments within NATO and increase defence spending to 2% of GDP.

“Estonia is one of only five NATO countries which met the requirements on raising defense spending to at least 2% of the total volume of GDP, — stated in the message. The governments of Latvia and Lithuania, the increase of these costs to bring them into budget plans to this level in 2018”.

Also, the report emphasized that “the United States has recently increased the amount allocated to Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania in the framework of the foreign military assistance”.
