Media: the nearest star to the Sun discovered “second Earth”

The European southern Observatory in Chile, plans to hold a conference, which is expected to be announced about the discovery of potentially habitable and very similar to the Earth planets in our neighboring star system. While the opening is not officially reported, a number of media reports that “double” of the Earth was found orbiting Proxima Centauri, located at a distance of 4.24 light years from the Sun.

Red dwarf Proxima Centauri, along with the double star α Centauri A and α Centauri B, is the nearest to us star system. According to data published in the German newspaper Der Spiegel, in orbit of Proxima Centauri found a planet resembling the Earth in many ways and, most importantly, located in the so-called habitable zone, i.e. at a distance from its star at which the planet can be water in liquid form, not freezing and not evaporating. Today it is considered one of the main conditions for origin of life.

To date, scientists have discovered a number of planets similar to Earth and located at the optimal distance from their stars, but they are all located much further from the Solar system.

Although the information that the earth-like planet orbiting Proxima Centauri directly detected, in fact the rumors, suspicions about its existence, scientists have recently expressed quite openly. Experts from the University of Pennsylvania conducted a computer simulation and came to the conclusion that with very high probability obita of Proxima Centauri were formed earth-like planet. Moreover, scientists have suggested that around the stars of α Centauri A or α Centauri B planets should be at least two.

It is worth noting that sometimes the rumors preceding the official announcement of a particular opening, subsequently justified. One of the most striking examples lately can be called the discovery of gravitational waves. Long before the official reports of their discovery of the relevant information on his page on Twitter posted a theoretical physicist from Arizona state University, Lawrence Krauss.
