According to Trudeau, the position of Washington in relation to the Crimea remained unchanged – the United States considers it part of Ukraine. While Russia is accusing Kiev in the preparation of sabotage on the Peninsula, allegedly deliberately distracting Washington from “real” problems.
“We don’t want to be distracted from the real problem – namely the Russian occupation and attempted annexation of Crimea and ongoing aggression in Eastern Ukraine,” said Trudeau.
According to the FSB, a group of Ukrainian saboteurs was discovered in the city of Armyansk on the night of 7 August. At itself they had found grenades, guns and explosives. Later it became known that the detainees were planning to carry out a series of bombings in the Crimea, to cause panic among the crowd and eventually kill tourism in the Peninsula.
Russian President Vladimir Putin called attempts to carry out terrorist attacks in the Crimea”stupid and pointless” campaign. The head of state urged the West to take concrete steps in order to put pressure on Kiev.
“Those who support the current Kiev authorities, have yet to decide what they want. They want their clients and then engage in provocations of this kind, or they want a real peace settlement,” he said.
In turn, President Petro Poroshenko called the accusations of the Russian side senseless and cynical fantasies that are the “reason for the new military threats against Ukraine.” The politician said that Kiev intends to seek the return of Crimea exclusively through political and diplomatic means.
