Putin and Erdogan “compared notes” before the G20 summit in China

Held in St. Petersburg the meeting of Vladimir Putin with President of Turkey Recep Tayyip Erdogan did not bring surprises. Hand, as expected, agreed on the resumption of the project “Turkish stream”, said the unity of views on the fight against terrorism and outlined steps for the gradual lifting of the Russian sanctions on Turkish companies. The crisis in Syria was also discussed at the meeting, behind closed doors. On this issue, Moscow and Ankara remain contradictions, but at a joint press conference the two leaders this issue was not raised. Substantive and constructive called the conversation with Erdogan, Putin, and the “MK” asked the experts their opinions about the negotiations.

Alex SAMPLES, leading researcher of the Centre for Asian and African studies:

“Before the match I said that it would be wonderful if the meeting was boring, and at a joint press conference would talk about tomatoes, the tourists and infrastructure projects, without discussing political topics. Almost happened, so I would have appreciated the talks as very positive. Countries, at least in the public space, managed not to slip into political rhetoric, mutual accusations, in the estimation of some acute problems, etc.

If we talk about some interesting aspects that may play a role in the further development of the relationship, I’d rather not look at a joint press conference the two presidents, and the interview that Erdogan gave RTR the 7th of August. In it he spoke about the acute problems in relations with Russia, in particular, noting that in Syria Assad is the main obstacle to resolving the crisis. Putin also recalled that the democratically elected leader can change only to another democratically elected leader, than returned the ball to the site of the Turkish President, who is himself not so long ago were in a situation of possible illegitimate change of power.

Another important point is the composition of the Turkish delegation formally involved in the economic issues included the head of Turkish intelligence. Obviously, many urgent issues were discussed behind closed doors, a fact which was not hidden. And the presence of this man in the delegation said as the seriousness of the Russian and Turkish approaches and that both parties to discuss sensitive issues did not go away.

And finally, let’s not forget that the negotiations took place a month before the G20 meeting in China. And when two such major powers as Russia and Turkey, check their position before this event is also a positive sign. It is no coincidence that Turkey will soon have to come to the US Secretary of state John Kerry, who, I believe, something to talk about with Erdogan. And then we benevolent and dull joint press conference hardly wait.”

GAFARLY Orhan, a Turkish political scientist:

“The Turkish side was originally set up in the first place, to the resumption of economic relations with Russia on lifting the embargo on agricultural products from Turkey.

Geopolitical issues were not minor, but, nevertheless, not the main. I think that while the immediate result has not been reached. But if there were formulated some kind of agreement, then their fruits will be visible directly in Syria. Assad’s role is still one of those items for which Moscow and Ankara are unable to reach agreement. Both countries want to preserve the integrity of Syria, but Russia proceeds from the necessity of Assad stay in power, and Turkey – from the necessity of his departure.

Another question – how Moscow is ready to support the Kurds in Syria. And only “on the field” in Syria we will see if the two States to come to some compromise. Do not forget that Turkey has to balance between the interests of not only Russia, but also Saudi Arabia, Qatar.”
