The Ministry of education denied mass layoffs of scientists and budget places in universities


Head of information policy Department Ministry of education and science Anna Usacheva has denied recent media reports that the Agency has proposed to cut several thousand scientists and severely cut back the number of budget places in universities.

This information is incorrect, Usacheva said in an interview with RIA Novosti. The representative of the Ministry noted that the number of budget places in universities guaranteed by the Federal law “On education in the Russian Federation and not subject to cuts.

At the same time, stressed the Agency interlocutor, the Ministry of education does not intend to reduce scientists. According to her, from 2016 payments to academicians and corresponding members of state academies of Sciences was increased in two times.

Earlier media reported that the Agency had recommended a reduction of up to ten thousand scientists and to cut the number of budget places in universities by 40% in connection with reduction of financing of state programmes “Development of education” and “Development of science and technology”. Also it was not excluded that can be trimmed and scholarships to students, however specific figures were not quoted.
