Davutoglu stressed that the decree was given in October last year. According to him, the order was aimed at ensuring the integrity of Turkish airspace and did not pursue the aim of destroying the specifically Russian combat aircraft.

The order, in particular, ordered the Turkish pilots to shoot down all aircraft that violate the airspace of the country. Davutoglu also said that Russian aircraft have repeatedly crossed the Turkish border.

The former Prime Minister said that now would assume political responsibility and gave a similar order.

Note that the Turkish Deputy Prime Minister Mehmet Simsek has stated that the destroyed bomber pilots their own decisions. Both pilots had recently been arrested after a failed coup attempt in Turkey.

The destruction of the Russian bomber has led to a serious deterioration in Russian-Turkish relations and the introduction of sanctions against Ankara.
