Probe “FILA” forever goodbye to the Earth

The official Twitter page of descent of the probe “Philae” on the comet Churyumov-Gerasimenko, there was a message, written on behalf of the descent module, in which he symbolically says goodbye to the Earth. Tomorrow at the research station “Rosetta” will disable the unit used to establish connection with the camera.

The descent probe “Fily” on Board a research of a spacecraft “Rosetta” was launched to the comet March 2, 2004. Both the probe closer to the celestial body in August 2014, after which the “Rosetta” reached its orbit, and Philae after another three months was directed to the surface of the cosmic body. Alas, during the landing there were technical problems: the probe failed to gain a foothold because it wasn’t in time to produce the necessary harpoons. As a result, the apparatus is carried in a part of the comet, which is much worse than was covered by the Sun. So after three days of operation of the device is no longer enough energy from solar panels, and he had to be transferred into “sleep mode”. After many months, he again made contact, but to send signals could only from 13 June to 9 July 2015, after which the connection with him again was interrupted — as time has shown, definitively.

In September the probe to descend to “join” and “Rosetta”. As soon as the comet is too distant from the Sun, and the unit will cease to run low on energy, it was decided to provide a gradual decline, during which experts hope to obtain more information. In September, the probe landed on the comet, and even if it passes, all the instruments on Board will be disabled and the mission is officially completed.

It’s time for me to say goodbye. Tomorrow, the unit on @ESA_Rosetta for communication with me will be switched off forever…

Despite unexpected technical difficulties, due to the spacecraft Philae and in the first place, Rozetta, scientists were able to collect a lot of information about the comet in particular that her age is approximately equal to the age of the Solar system, about five percent of it is water ice, and that it contains a large amount of oxygen is gradually evaporating. Also in the gases, which throws the comet probe Philae was able to detect organic compounds.

Philae became the first probe in history landing on a comet, and the comet Churyumov-Gerasimenko, respectively, the first comet, which was visited by the research unit. As told in an interview to “MK” one of the authors of the discovery of the comet, Svetlana Gerasimenko, to detect the space object was greatly helped by a coincidence: the first time she saw the comet in the picture, due to the lack of developer was slightly defective, in the center of the plate was a dark spot. Subsequently, the discovery was confirmed, and in 2004, the European space Agency decided to send to the comet Churyumov—Gerasimenko probe research.
