The Portuguese antónio Guterres won the first round of the election of the UN Secretary-General


On Thursday, members of the UN Security Council took part in the voting for the election of the new Secretary General of the UN. The voting took place behind closed doors and will last for several months. As the new UN Secretary General, who will succeed ban Ki-moon, expect six men and six women.

According to “Interfax”, in the first round won the high representative of the UN Commissioner for refugees, Portuguese Antonio Guterres. He bypassed the former President of Slovenia Danilo Turk.

Recall that the security Council members traditionally are unable to nominate a candidate from their country.

The final selection will be approved by the General Assembly of the United Nations.
