From space – on sparrows: the ISS will establish bird watching

How can be linked the international space station and the birds? To combine these two concepts made possible by new development of scientists. They created the apparatus for tracking the movements of birds and small animals from space.

The complex of ICARUS (International Cooperation for Animal Research Using Space — International cooperation in the field of scientific animal research using space technologies”) includes electronic unit, and interfaces, as well as receiving and transmitting antennas that will be installed on the outer surface of Russian service module “Zvezda”.

The experiment was unique in that it will allow to work on Board the space station technology tracking of small animals by weight, no heavier than 200 grams (until recently, with the ISS would be only for large animals). One of them will definitely fall birds. Previously on birds, which will be installed surveillance, consolidate module ICARUS not exceeding five grams. This module combines a GLONASS/GPS receiver, a radio transmitter and receiver, battery, solar battery, temperature sensors, and acceleration.

As explained by the Deputy head of the scientific-technical center, RSC Energia, Professor Mikhail BELYAEV, the onboard equipment makes the German side and the Russian Corporation engaged in the creation of interfaces for the installation of this equipment on the Russian segment of the ISS.

Sending equipment to the station is scheduled for 2017. Antenna installation will be performed during the provided for this six-hour spacewalk.

-All incoming sensor information will be transmitted to the ISS, processed and transmitted to the mission control Center. Then, in accordance with the agreement, the data will go to the Institute of geography, Russian Academy of Sciences and the German Institute of ornithology max Planck – said Belyaev. – The resulting science data is designed to help in solving various environmental problems, climate change, preservation of biodiversity, controlling the spread of infectious diseases, the prevention of catastrophic events, ensuring the safety of air traffic.
