Harmless nanoparticles for cancer treatment developed in Russia

A group of scientists representing the Moscow state University named after M. V. Lomonosov in cooperation with colleagues from Germany has created a special silicon nanoparticles for cancer treatment, is able to penetrate into the diseased cells, to release the entrapped drug, and to quickly decompose without harm to the body.

Experts underline that silicon nanoparticles differ from nanoparticles of gold, silver, titanium oxide, cadmium selenide, and others, because they are not actually removed from the body, resulting after some time, begin to cause him harm. At the same time, experiments have shown that silicon nanoparticles such problems do not arise, said an employee of MSU Love Osminkina.

The specialists of Moscow state University. M. V. Lomonosova and Institute of photonic technology in Jena conducted a study in which watched how kremnivye nanoparticles will affect breast cancer cells. Observation method was used Raman spectroscopy, which allows to “Shine through” living cells without damaging them, and to follow the contained substances.

As it turned out, after the nanoparticles successfully delivered the drug, they started to decompose already after 9 hours, and two weeks later fully broke up into silicic acid and other generally safe for human substance. According to the researchers, their results significantly hasten the establishment of cancer therapy without side effects.

The direction in which scientists work, called “theranostic” because they are working on techniques for the simultaneous diagnosis of the disease and its treatment (name of the direction combination of the words “therapy” and “diagnostics”.
