Hostages of rebels in Yerevan were several high-ranking police officers

Barely two days after the suppression of the failed coup in Turkey, as in neighboring Armenia, there was an attempt something like that. The magnitude of the internal conflict in this Transcaucasian Republic, of course, not comparable with what happened in the birthplace of Erdogan. But the seizure of the police building in Yerevan, a shootout in which one policeman was killed and three were wounded, hostage-taking of officers — all event out of the ordinary.

About 30 armed people early in the morning drove his truck through the gates of the regiment of the police in the district of Erebuni. During the ensuing firefight killed one officer. According to unconfirmed reports, the attackers fell to the Deputy chief of a regiment of patrol-guard service of Arthur Vanoyan. Injured police Colonel Aram Hovhannisyan, Lieutenant Colonel Grach, Oxegen and warrant officer Gagik Mkrtchyan. Several police officers were held hostage by the raiders. Among them the Deputy chief of Yerevan police Valery Osipyan and , according to some, the Deputy chief of the Armenian police major-General of police Vardan Yeghiazaryan. Officers arrived at the police station to negotiate with the strikers, but found themselves captured. At the time of signing the numbers the community of Erebuni was blocked by the police, all roads leading to it are blocked. The highway and roads leading to Yerevan are under the control of the police. Law enforcement and security staff will stop and check suspicious vehicles.

From the outset it was clear that the seizure of the police building is not a simple crime, and the action is politically motivated. Insurgents, by capture, demanded the release of opposition leader Zhirayr Sefilyan, who was detained on 20 June for weapons possession. A native of Beirut, a hero of the war in Nagorno-Karabakh, the commander of a separate battalion in Shusha since 2000, went into politics, being in rigid opposition to almost all official authorities of Armenia. Sefilyan has consistently called for changing the system under President Robert Kocharyan, and the current head of the Republic Serzh Sargsyan. The country’s leaders Sefilyan was accused of too loyal position on Nagorno-Karabakh. In his opinion, only to the last war, not negotiations, can solve the problem of Artsakh. Is it any wonder that Jirayr Sefilyan was periodically locked up. The first time he was arrested in December 2006 on charges of public appeals to violent change of the constitutional order and convicted of unlawful possession of a weapon for a year and a half. In June 2008, he was released. In April 2015 Sefilyan was arrested again on suspicion of preparing mass riots. But after a month released. After the April aggression azerbaidjanskoi parties in Nagorno-Karabakh, Sefilyan with a new force began to accuse the government in taking the interests of Armenia. He curled on the creation of a “powerful resistance”, urging to join the entire global Armenian Diaspora. It is not surprising that on 20 June he was again detained. A month before the police at the time of the accident was found in the trunk of one of the vehicles weapons. It turned out that the car belongs to the supporters Sefilyan, coordinator of the civil initiative “New Armenia” and “Founding Parliament”. As a result, the investigation concluded that Zhirayr Sefilyan together with a group of people through a planned armed attacks with weapons of capture of buildings, constructions, means of communication, including the TV tower at Yerevan. Last week Sefilyan gave his supporters a letter from Vargashinskiy prison, in which he urged them to continue along the formation of the resistance movement. Apparently, this movement decided to proceed with the action. However, if you can call this action an attempted coup? With this issue of “MK” asked the expert:

Mikhail ALEXANDROV, leading expert of the Center for military-political studies, MGIMO:

– Is difficult to define what happened in Yerevan. Naturally, this is not an armed uprising: a broad group of followers from the men who seized the police station, no. They are a rather small group of angry citizens associated with Zhirayr Seilenos, who was recently arrested on charges of preparing terrorist attacks. And formally capture a police station with political demands it is possible to qualify as a terrorist act. The more that were killed one person. However, no specific prospects at this action. Even opposition leaders of Armenia do not approve of such actions. I think it could be inspired by the West after the failure of the planned coup in Turkey. Apparently, it is such a desperate attempt to rehabilitate themselves in the hope that suddenly everything in Armenia as a snowball will roll. Because of the opposition of the mood there now, indeed, very strong. The power of Serzh Sargsyan, many in the country are very annoying. This is due to the economic situation and the situation with Nagorno-Karabakh. People are unhappy that nobody has been punished for the fact that the military was not prepared for the attack from the Azerbaijani side and the army suffered heavy losses. The main dissatisfaction is due to the system of public administration in Armenia: people crave the change of personnel, change of policy, the punishment of corrupt officials. But the methods of colleagues Sefilyan hardly anyone believes is right.
