Ukraine was renamed the city of Kirovograd

The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine on Thursday was renamed the regional center Kirovograd – now the city is called “onward” in memory of mark Lukic Kropiwnicki, Ukrainian actor and playwright of the 19th and 20th centuries.

Today’s decision people’s deputies doesn’t look the most controversial because of the sociological surveys conducted in Kirovograd in the last half year, showed an obvious rejection of his people imposed from Kiev “decompensirovanny” names.

82% of locals are against the renaming of the beloved city. If Kiev demands implementation of the law on decommunization – more than half of the residents called for the return of their pre-revolutionary names “Yelisavetgrad”.

In 1924, the town named in honor of the fortress of St. Elizabeth, was renamed to Zinoviev (named after the Soviet politician). 10 years later, after the exposure of “enemies of the people” Zinoviev and Kamenev, the city became known as the “Kirovo-Ukrainian”.

In 1939 the city acquired the name of Kirovograd, and formed around it, the area became Kirovohrad. Did it, in order not to confuse new region of the Ukrainian SSR with the already existing Kirov region and the city – Kirov (Vyatka) and Kirov, Kaluga region.
