“Herring” is returned from the Soviet Union


The Agency predicts a return to the shelves of the legendary in Soviet times, “herring iwashi”. Catch this extremely cheap once the fish extracted in huge volumes, resumes for the first time in a quarter century. Does this mean that soon the Russian shops will be crowded with cheap far Eastern herring, mined off the coast of the Kuril Islands?

On the Russian counters is returned iwashi sardine, better known under the name “herring”, said Deputy Minister of agriculture of Russia, head of Rosrybolovstvo Ilya Shestakov. Catch “herring, true sardine” was not about 25 years, since its reserves were exhausted. This year after studying the reserves of the true sardine and mackerel will start the catch of these fish species.

According to him, the main approaches of this fish will be in the area of the Kuril Islands. Therefore, to get to treatment iwashi need local plants, which are already being negotiated.

Difficult fish

Iwashi is a complex object fishery. Suffice it to say that its catch was about 25 years due to exhaustion of reserves. “Iwashi is a well – liked herring. But it’s cyclical fish, and it has a cycle for more than 30 years. The last time its population was at its peak in the 70-80-ies, then iwashi caught under 1 million tons. This is a very large catches. Then she just disappeared, went nowhere,” says the President VARPE Alexander Fomin. Fully fishing iwashi was discontinued in the early 90-ies, when the number plummeted. The number iwashi can then fade, then it is going to rise significantly. Now scientists record as mass times the arrival of this fish and is recommended to resume production. However, once reach the peak of the catch is still not out.

According to Shestakov, scientists are very careful in predictions about the harvest. “Still not known when will be peak harvest. So while I wouldn’t say the beginning of the mass of the fishery. Scientists give more modest forecasts – 150-200 thousand tons this year,” – said Fomin.

Complex and the fish in the treatment. “Iwashi is a very delicate fish, it must be immediately preserved to do. This means that we still have to arrange the recycling on the shore. I think that in 2-3 years we’ll adjust, and at the peak of the catch will come in 8 years” – said Fomin.

The shelf life of raw materials for the manufacture of preserves of sardines iwashi is only 1-2 months, of mackerel – only 2-2,5 months. However, scientists from TINRO-Centre believe that the problem of increasing the shelf life of frozen fish to 1 year and increase in terms of usage of frozen raw material for canning can be resolved. Previously, a similar problem was successfully solved for sirovich canned food.

If Russian processors will be able to develop the technology of canning production of raw materials iwashi, these cans can be a good alternative to Baltic sprats, say scientists TINRO-Center.

“Translated from Japanese means iwashi “sardine”. It’s a little far Eastern sardine, and in the Soviet Union, just not very accurately reproduced the name of this fish as “herring” – said the head of the Information Agency on fisheries Alexander Saveliev. “Herring” is also the product of Soviet food shortages, fish in particular. To save the fish, it had to salt and sell it in barrels or canned. It was cheap and affordable for the people product,” – says the expert.

According to Savelyev, Chinese, Korean, Japanese, American and Soviet fishermen together at the time, was producing at its peak over 5 million tonnes iwashi per year, including the Soviet fishermen – almost 1 million tons. However, all of it in the USSR was not eaten, a large part was spent on animal feed. Fed Sables, black and brown foxes, it was a valuable feed for fur animals.

Now, it is sure to catch of 1 million tons, no one will, and not the fact that he will be able to return to these peak volumes. “The main thing is we don’t need a million iwashi. In Russia, many do not eat. Just look at Pollock for the first time since our fishermen were caught about 1 million tons, but most of it was exported to China. Far Eastern fishermen produced 1.5 million tons of fish for six months and only 304 thousand tons, that is, the fifth, was sent into the inner regions of Russia”, – says Alexander Saveliev.

“Russia consumes a maximum of about 300 thousand tons of Pollock. I don’t think iwashi will be able to eat more. And to sell iwashi in international markets, will have to “knock”: there is more liquid types of fish,” he adds.

According to him, the fishermen do not see benefits from this whole undertaking, therefore, there is no certainty that any of them dares to start a new business. Applications for the catch do not mean that the fishermen do go out to sea.

To equip an expedition to fish is expensive, it is necessary to equip the ships. “Just a hike of the vessel is 20 thousand dollars a day,” – says Savel’ev. And here we are on new target species, the prospects of catching and realization of this fish is unknown. On the one hand, the Russian market has a huge space to appear on the shelves of the new fish. On the other hand, fish consumption in the past year fell to 14 kg per capita level in the year, although the Ministry of health recommends 22 kg for a healthy diet.

“We malnourished fish. The failure in consumption arose not because people have ceased to love the fish, but because there is no money, it has become expensive and inaccessible. Fish production has risen 2-5 times,” – says Savel’ev.

To make iwashi available, it sure would be impossible. Far Eastern fishermen from 1.5 million tons of fish caught, only a fifth of sold in the domestic market. They prefer to export because it is profitable. The regulator did nothing to motivate the domestic market, so our fish is eaten in Japan, China, etc.” – summarizes the expert.
