Device “Juno” can unravel the mystery of the crazy energy of Jupiter

The tenth mission to Jupiter was given the first result. The Juno spacecraft, or “Juno” sent to Earth the first photo. In the picture, taken July 10, with a distance of 4 million kilometers, see Jupiter and three of 67 of its satellites — IO, Europa and Ganymede (left to right). On the surface of Jupiter seen a huge storm — the Great red spot, the size in excess of the Earth. That in addition to the beautiful photos of scientists expect the largest planet in the Solar system, we talked with candidate of physico-mathematical Sciences, senior researcher of the space research Institute of RAS, Deputy head of the Department of space physics, MIPT Alexander RODIN.

The spacecraft “Juno”, according to a homeland, is valuable because it is aimed at Jupiter himself. This is his main goal unlike the previous mission, Galileo”, which mainly studied the satellites of the planet from 1995 to 2003. In particular, the apparatus is approached to the nearest distance to all four halleluiah satellites — IO, Ganymede, Europe, and Callisto (named so due to the fact that they opened in the XVII century, Gallileo Galliley) and helped to draw the following conclusions: to confirm the presence of thin atmospheres on three of them, as well as the presence of liquid water under their surface. The apparatus also discovered a magnetic field around Ganymede. Now turn to study the depths of Jupiter.

We know so little about the biggest planet in our Solar system, it is so rich that we can not even imagine what secrets we might uncover, ” says Rodin. – The first mega-mission is to study the magnetosphere of Jupiter, which it is the most powerful compared to the other planets. The magnetic field is very large, communicates with the satellite system is extremely rich, and because a significant portion of the planned experiments Juno connected with this.

The second task of scientists is to try to understand the internal structure of Jupiter: to observe the magnetic field, its variations in time dynamics of the atmosphere, to delve deeper into its chemistry. For the next 15 years, this milestone studies of Jupiter will be the main.

Gas giant Jupiter is sometimes called a “failed star” because of its huge mass — 1,8986 x 10 27 kg. of a degree The smallest of known red dwarfs just by 30 % larger in diameter. Perhaps Jupiter still has a chance to step to the rank of star?

He has no such chance. Now, thanks to the progress of observational astronomy, we know that in our Galaxy there are many planets similar to Jupiter. This is a fairly typical representative of astrophysical objects. Of course this is not a star it is a planet, although Jupiter radiates more energy than it receives from the Sun. But this energy does not result from thermonuclear reactions, as a result of compression of the planet and other complex chemical reactions that we are not yet known.

– This question can be answered by “Juno”?

– I think that this is not possible, may be the most amazing finds.

Experts suggest the existence of life on Jupiter. What gives them such hope?

– Direct evidence of life on the moons of Jupiter we have. All the talk about life on halleluiah satellites are based on one single hypothesis: in line with the theory of the internal structure, their mantle (and they mostly consist of water) also must be in a liquid state. Most likely this water is unfit for life, – a strong solution of salts. But we know that life cannot exist without water, and places where it can exist in the Solar system not so much. Beyond Earth there is water only in robes of IO, Europe, Ganymede and Callisto. But, most likely impediments to the existence of life there is still more.
