The Imam of the Moscow mosque “Yardyam” Mahmoud Valitova charged with incitement to terrorism and the justification of terrorist activities. The case may become very loud. This is the first case in Russia when such a well-known representative of the Islamic clergy brought to trial for similar charges.
Velitov placed under house arrest until August 27. It is forbidden to use the Internet, mobile and landline phone. However, he is allowed to communicate with a medical professional, as he is an invalid of the second group, suffered a heart attack and stroke.
As reported by the newspaper VIEW of the mosque Yardyam”, any special operation on detention of Valitova was not. “The Sheikh was summoned to the police station to talk. On this day it was his day off, he went. Now we pray for Allah that all figured out and he was released,” – said in the mosque.
The Agency TASS citing a source in law enforcement bodies reports that investigators raided several locations – the place of residence Valitova and mosques “Yardyam”. “During the searches, seized religious literature, electronic media, financial documentation,” – said the source.
Later Velitov was taken to Butyrskaya court where he was charged under paragraph 1 of article 205.2 of the criminal code (“Public appeals to implementation of terrorist activity or public justification of terrorism”). He faces up to five years of imprisonment. He admitted his guilt partially.
Valitova lawyer Dagir khasavov told the newspaper VIEW that his client is charged with support in one of his sermons and in interviews, participants banned in Russia organization “Hizb-ut-Tahrir al-Islami” (“Party of Islamic liberation”).
According to the defense, Velitov did not know that the man he supported, was a member of this organization. Speech, apparently, goes about Chapaeve Abdullah, a Muslim activist from Dagestan, killed in September 2013. The defense will appeal the court’s decision and insists on re-psychological-linguistic examination in the case.
It is worth noting that hasayev have a successful track record of winning cases concerning accusations of extremism. He was suspected of extremist activities, after the TV channel REN-TV called for the introduction of Sharia courts in Russia. Hasayev said that his words had lodged in the wrong context: it was only for the transfer to the Sharia courts is a small family business. This practice, incidentally, exists in many European countries. The case against the lawyer was dismissed for lack of evidence.
Mosque Yardyam was built in Otradnoe district of Moscow in 1997. She is very popular among the Muslims of the capital, in the circles which are informally referred to as “Tatar”: most of its members are Tatars and Bashkirs. In fact, the mosque was built on money of Russian Muslims and the Tatar charitable society “Hilal”.
Mahmud Velitov became the Imam of this mosque many years ago. It is quite famous in the circles of the Russian Muslim clergy. Velitov was born in Moscow in 1951 to a religious family. He is the brother of religious leader Abdulkadir Valitova, who received in Soviet times, of great renown among the faithful for organizing a campaign against plans to demolish the Cathedral mosque of the capital, she allegedly interfered with the construction of the sports complex for the Moscow Olympics in 1980. In the same 1980 Abdulkadir Valitov was killed, the crime was never solved.
Mahmud Velitov served in the Soviet army, he graduated from the madrasa Mir-Arab in Bukhara and the Tashkent Islamic Institute. Was an Imam in Novosibirsk, in Moscow. In the capital for eight years he was the spiritual head of the Historic mosque, the oldest in the capital. Is considered the first Imam of Moscow that started the khutba (Friday sermon) in Russian.
An interesting feature in an interview with RIA “Novosti” gave Valitova the head of the spiritual administration of Muslims (DUM) of Moscow and the chief Imam of the Moscow Cathedral mosque Ildar Alyautdinov.
“Mahmud velitov Hazrat was the rector of the mosque in Otradnoye, which is a little apart, as a separate state with their orders. Unfortunately, sometimes these rules do not always comply with certain rules of Islam, and many Muslims sometimes hear complaints about this” he said, adding that he with Valitova was not familiar. His departure from Historic mosque Alyautdinov tied with the “kind of conflict, but the details did not reveal. Probably refers to the conflict in 1996 associated with trying to shift Valitova from the post of Imam.
“Hizb-ut-Tahrir – an organization that is evaluated in the world is ambiguous. In some countries (Pakistan, Turkey, Russia and many others) banned. In even more countries – for example, in the United States, France, Italy, Hizb-ut-Tahrir is considered a radical organization, not directly involved in terrorism, but, of course, conducive to their promotion of the growth of radicalism.Related posts:
