Astronomers puzzled by the galaxy-“Frankenstein”

Galaxy UGC 1382, opened in the 1960-ies of the last century and since then was considered quite ordinary, upon closer inspection, very surprised scientists. As it turned out, – it is, in the cosmic sense, young, and surrounding the spiral disk — old. To explain this configuration of the galaxy-“Frankenstein”, according to scientists, is very difficult.

UGC 1382 located approximately 250 million light years from Earth. For a long time it was considered to be small (again, by cosmic standards), but new measurements suggest that the diameter of it may be many times greater than the milky way and is one of the largest isolated galaxies in the Universe. As mark says, Seibert from the Observatory of the Carnegie institution for science in Pasadena, lead author of the study, the galaxy was considered fairly well studied, but astronomers have not been able to fix the signs that now appear to be the main feature of this structure is a huge spiral arms, stretching about 718 thousand light-years. Only in 2009 have received some information about what is beyond the known at that time, part of the galaxy may be a disk of hydrogen, but for a long time, even this information has not been confirmed. Only now it became known about the true dimensions of the outer part of the galaxy that contains not too many stars, but it is possible to observe a large amount of dark matter.

Experts say that the galaxy core which contains more younger stars than in the sleeves, is a very surprising discovery — about the same it would be strange if biologists found a tree, the inner ring is under the age of external. So far, experts are not ready to say with certainty, how can we explain such a phenomenon, but as one of the assumptions put forward the idea that UGC 1382 may represent a number of “sticky” dwarf galaxies, once the inner part each of which could now be on the outside, while external is the opposite, to get inside, “mixed” with other galaxies.

The results of their study, the scientists wrote in the scientific journal Astrophysical Journal.
