The Polish Senate under the leadership of the ruling nationalist party “law and justice” recognized the Volyn massacre an act of genocide against the poles and other small peoples of the Western Ukraine (voted for 60 of the 84 senators). Now the same decision on 11 July should take the diet, where the nationalists, too, the majority of votes. The Ukrainian foreign Ministry urges poles not to hurry and to leave history to the experts…
As stated in the text of the resolution of the Senate, in the Volyn massacre, in addition to poles and other national minorities were also killed and those Ukrainians who tried to prevent the UPA (Ukrainian insurgent army, banned in Russia – “MK”) to commit their atrocities. A day of remembrance of this tragedy are planning to do on July 11.
Help “MK”: “Volyn massacre” referred to the events in 1943 on t Volyn, which until 1939 had been under Polish control. Of the OUN-UPA destroyed the poles lived there, thus were lost, by different estimates, from 30 to 50 thousand people.Against OUN-UPA with the support of the home Army fought the local self-defense units”.
Earlier one of leaders of the Ukrainian neo-Nazis, and concurrently, speaker of the Verkhovna Rada Andriy Parubiy claimed that he managed to persuade his colleagues in Warsaw to raise this issue after the NATO summit. But the renaming of the Moscow Boulevard in Kiev in honor of Stepan Bandera, apparently broke the camel’s Polish patience.
Mikhail Pogrebinsky, Director of Kiev center of political researches and conflictology:
– According to my information, in the Volyn massacre were killed from 60 to 80 thousand people, most of whom were poles. The truth is that it was the extermination of people on a national basis. The problem is that modern Ukrainian leadership refuses to acknowledge the responsibility of those political forces who were behind this crime, and, on the contrary, it glorifies them.
Now Poland asserting itself as a regional leader, and it is important to use Ukraine as its “Junior partner”. So while relations between Warsaw and Kiev will be just an unpleasant chill, and this exacerbation will take place after relations between NATO and Moscow will improve.
Konstantin Bondarenko, head of the Fund “Ukrainian politics”:
– Along with the Katyn Volyn massacre is one of the most important national myths of Poland. The Ukrainian authorities should have known that “Law and justice” a matter of honor is to dot the “and” in this issue, as their main electorate is in the Western part of Poland, where many immigrants from the Volyn region. By the way, last week representatives of the Polish intelligentsia, among whom was the previous Prime Minister and the President of Poland, appealed to Ukraine with a proposal to recognize the crimes committed during the Second world war and come to terms on this. The same conciliatory act in his time occurred between Warsaw and Berlin. But Kyiv ignored the gesture on the part of the Polish public. Denying the crimes of the UPA, Kyiv spoil relations with one of their senior partners and lawyers in Europe.Related posts:
