The Hague will not ratify the Association agreement of Ukraine with the European Union without additional legal safeguards. This was stated by Prime Minister of the Netherlands mark Rutte after the summit of EU leaders in Brussels.
Rutte has addressed the EU leadership with a request to provide a “legally binding” guarantee that the interests of the Netherlands will be taken into account in the case of ratification of the Association agreement of Ukraine with the EU.
“We need a legally binding decision that will settle all disputes in the Netherlands, which led to the referendum,” Reuters quoted Dutch Prime Minister. Recall that during the April plebiscite the majority of the Dutch voted against the Association of Ukraine and the EU.
Rutte admitted that does not know in what form will be implemented this legal decision. The Prime Minister did not rule out that the text of the agreement will have to change. “We need to find answers to people’s concerns. If we can’t do it, then no, we don’t ratify”, — he stressed.
The Netherlands remains the only EU country that has not ratified the agreement on Association of Ukraine, providing for closer political, legal and trade relations between the EU and Kiev. At a meeting held on April 6 referendum, the majority of the Dutch, 61 percent, voted against the agreement, supported him a little more than 38 percent of the electorate.
The results are nonbinding, but Dutch authorities found it impossible not to take into account the opinion of its participants. After the referendum Rutte gave the order to start consultations with European countries on introducing amendments to the agreement in accordance with the wishes of those who voted against.Related posts:
