The Commander’s reserve for the first time revealed the dead body of the whale-cloverie

What do whales eat-cleverely, discovered by Russian scientists during the autopsy of the animal, thrown on the days on the shore of Bering island (located in the Northern part of the Pacific ocean). Specialists of the State nature biosphere reserve, Komandorsky Zapovednik conducted a unique study. Globally, less than 50 individuals of cluburile were studied for the power Commander in the reserve such an occasion presented itself for the first time.

According to experts, ecology and the diet of this species is still very poorly understood, so each study has a great importance for science. On the shore of Bering island (the territory of the reserve “commander”) was discovered from two bodies of cluburile – male and female. The degree of their preservation varied greatly, but, nevertheless, scientists were able to use for studies of both findings.

The corpse better preserved, scientists have opened, cut the intestines and stomach, washed of their contents. In the sample in large quantity was undigested squid beaks, bones and otoliths (solid formation on the surface of cells) fish. A corpse in advanced state of decomposition, was unable to take samples for food and took only a few body measurements.

Common klaveril is one of the most widespread species in the world, along with the sperm whale and killer whale. Also klaveril is one of the most frequently encountered species of cetacean, which are on the shore, including the commander Islands. While this animal live here, meet very rarely. According to recent studies it is the deep-diving marine mammals, diving depth (instrumentally recorded) those whales up to 3 km, duration dives of more than 2 hours.

“Beached cluborlov found a local resident from the island of Bering, and reported to the reserve. Our staff immediately went to the place of discovery, – says the Deputy Director of the reserve “commander” for science, the marine mammal specialist Eugene Mamaev. – Both bodies have taken samples of skin and muscle tissue for genetic studies, adipose tissue – for analysis for heavy metals.
