“Brakit” contagious: the Italians after the British persuaded to leave the Eurozone

On the background of a British referendum on leaving the EU, the Italian eurosceptic party the five star Movement called for a nationwide vote in Italy at the exit from the Eurozone. According to The Wall Street Journal, citing a television appearance representative of the party and the head of the chamber of deputies of Italy Luigi di Maio. The statement was made some time after the party won a series of victories in municipal elections.

“The Euro today is not working as it should, – quoted by the business newspaper the words of Mayo. – There is a need to consider other alternatives, such as “Euro-2″ or something else”. According to WSJ, the possibility of a referendum will not have legal force under the laws of Italy, such a vote does not affect international agreements, but the Italian referendum on leaving the Euro, writes the newspaper, can become a lever of pressure on the authorities.

Note that the opposition party “Five stars” gaining political clout: she has won 19 of the 20 Italian municipalities in the recent elections.

“They won the election in a number of cities, – noted in conversation with “MK” head of the Center for party and political studies of the Institute of Europe RAS Vladimir Schweitzer. – This movement has any political chances, but the majority Italians and political parties to this case (referring to a possible referendum on the Euro area – MK) do not support, therefore, for Italy, this issue is not… It’s a PR stunt. The party is on the horse and begins to put forward this sort of thing. “Five star movement” in Italy – not the main political force: they then lose, then win, then go into the shadows. It’s not a party, but a conglomerate of different forces – not the left nor the right, but it is not clear what sense”.

However, the respondents “MK”, the expert does not exclude that the eurosceptics in different countries can “raise its head”, if the proponents of leaving the EU would win in Britain. “If the British vote will give a negative answer to the question about future EU membership, then perhaps some progress can be,” admits Vladimir Schweitzer – although it is unlikely that the entire EU will take immediately and bloom. It will continue to exist. Moreover, all now say that the decision of David Cameron on the referendum was populist.

“This kind of mood is another in a number of countries also noted the interlocutor of “MK”. But I don’t think that such small European countries, like Hungary, Slovakia, Romania and Bulgaria take in and out of the EU. They receive from the EU much more than they give. And those countries that give and receive about the same, are Germany, France, Spain. They will remain, but may change the conditions in which there is the EU. Can change and the EU Constitution may be changed and the procedure for approval of decisions. This is real, and the fact that all the skeptics go with drawn swords, it’s unlikely”.
