Sanctions against Russia extended

On 21 June the European Union will extend sectoral sanctions (financial and technology) against Russia. However, the sanctions standoff still goes to a new level: economic constraints continue to operate, but now in the West think of the formula for their withdrawal. For this act the authoritative policy of many countries of the European Union to relieve pressure on Moscow. However, negotiations on this subject, still tied to the status of Crimea and the situation in the Donbass, so expect the imminent onset of a bright future is not necessary. Not by chance in the government of Russia has prepared a draft government resolution on the extension product of the sanctions from 7 August until 31 December 2017.

On 18 June, the European Union extended sanctions against the former Ukrainian Peninsula for another year and the 21st the same thing, but in six months will make against Moscow from the Donbass. While the Russian authorities continue to stoically endure the blows of fate, the nerves passed, Kazakhstan and Belarus. The Minister of foreign Affairs of the Central Asian Republic of Kazakhstan Erlan Idrissov said that Astana are tired of the politicized sanctions, which all gets worse. And the first Deputy foreign Minister of Belarus Alexander Mikhnevich said the country, which in recent years became famous for its Parmesan cheese and oysters, also not profiting and suffering because of the confrontation between Russia and the West.

As the President of Russia Vladimir Putin said that the food counter-sanctions will not cancel, because Moscow fears that it might “throw”, the allies in the CIS do not believe that someone would go back on their word, therefore, urged to implement the Minsk agreements. For the same pushing their colleagues from Austria and France.

Sebastian Kurz, the head of the Austrian foreign Ministry, proposed the creation of such a mechanism, by which after every completed paragraph of a peace Treaty will come a relief in the economic confrontation. Apparently, the French foreign Minister, Jean-Marc Ayrault liked the idea, and he said that the June 28-29 European Union will discuss what to do in case of improvement of a situation on Donbass. “We should not be satisfied with the automatic extension of the sanctions for six months, need discussion and to the President of France Francois Hollande and German Chancellor Angela Merkel said, what has been achieved in the framework of the “Normandy format” for the implementation of the Minsk agreements”, – he declared on 20 June. Note that a similar statement was quite expected, given that over the past year the Ukrainian authorities were behind the delay in peaceful settlement of the conflict, while Russia was doing everything in her power to persuade the DNR and LNR to compromise.

Recall that the first package of sanctions the EU imposed against Russia after it annexed the Crimea. A number of Russian businessmen were deprived of the opportunity to travel to Europe and their assets in these countries were frozen. The European Union imposed a ban on the maintenance of business relations with those companies that were in the “black list” and prohibited to invest in the Crimea up until the power it provides Russia.

At the same time, the so-called “sectoral sanctions” that affected the ban on the delivery of Russian arms, financial transactions of several Russian companies and so on, were imposed after near Donetsk was shot down Boeing MH17. If Western States decided that Moscow provides comprehensive support for the self-proclaimed DNR and LC, and therefore, it is necessary to push to restore the territorial integrity of Ukraine.

However, if you believe European politicians, some of the sanctions might soon be lifted. If this happen, then, according to Putin, Moscow is ready to withdraw its food embargo. However, it should be noted that the Prime Minister of Russia Dmitry Medvedev has proposed to extend the response up to the end of 2017, since, according to him, Russian entrepreneurs have already adapted to the new conditions. This may indicate that in the Kremlin to hear the discussion in the European Union, but do not believe that they can bring to positive results in the foreseeable future.
