The circus Princess has replaced the Queen of summer


In the framework of the graduation concerts of the Moscow state Academy of choreography on the Historic stage of the Bolshoi theatre hosted the premiere of John Neumeier’s “seasons”. The largest European choreographer has long worked with Russian theatres (the Mariinsky theatre, More Musical theatre of Stanislavsky and Nemirovich-Danchenko), but for our choreographic school, he puts first, and the importance of this project to develop the school can not be overestimated.

The ballet “the seasons”, though, and is based on the beautiful music of Glazunov, the scene is not often. Productions of this ballet were less successful and are not entrenched in ballet. A setback suffered even Marius Petipa, who set the ballet in 1900, after the triumphant success they created together with full-length Glazunov’s ballet “Raymonda”. In contrast, “the seasons” ballet in one act. In fact, we have the dance Suite. The composer created the music for the theme of eternal renewal of nature and life, the decaying, the rising again. And the idea of an allegorical ballet in which each season serves with his symbols and attributes that have arisen from Ivan Vsevolozhsky, the former “theatrical autocrat,” by the time removed from the office of the Imperial theatres and was appointed Director of the Hermitage. Retaining the structure and partially Glazunov libretto of the ballet, Neumeier nevertheless made a significant change. Allegorical figures of the seasons in his ballet, no dwarfs, satyrs, fauns, and bacchantes wachov. Like Petipa, the ballet was staged in the spirit of the ballets of Saint-Leon, where the content is important only as an excuse for dancing, and the show always finishes with a large and lush grand pas. There are a lot of birds and flowers (daisies, cornflowers, butterflies and bumblebees), which gives the opportunity to take in the play of the younger students.

Nevertheless, the impression of simplicity and plainness in this ballet is deceptive. John Neumeier asked to compose Glazunov 15 years ago and set it up for students organized ballet school in Hamburg. And this should be considered when evaluating works, because the “seasons” stand out in the work of the Hamburg genius. This ballet is, of course, more readable than the other choreographer’s dances, often overloaded with philosophical and cultural associations. Nevertheless, it is intended primarily for children and young people and delivered especially for them and they are not without a rich philosophical connotation. The dance, invented by Neumeier, are in keeping with the exuberant jubilation of Glazunov Orgy, often associated with the Hamburg choreographer with the flesh… But of fauns, satyrs, and bacchantes wachow replaced modern boys and girls dressed in swimming trunks and bathing suits and playing beach ball swimmers and swimmers, one of whom falls for a teenage athlete.

Ballet, like Glazunov, does not end with the image of the approaching winter, and its ending is quite optimistic. In the Suite, named from Glazunov’s “Autumn,” a clown and a girl (athlete, finding a beach lover, leaving friends back in the summer) and catching up has painted a bright circus wagon with a troupe of actors, and in the final ballet grand pas, built as a circus, Oh, we will see: here dances and eight students — white horses with luxurious manes and tails decorated with sultaniye, with jockey and the ninth horse in the center; and a trio of athletes with swollen muscles, with the stress of the last forces lifting a heavy barbell (the scene is solved with humor, and after a powerlifters one of the prop rod girl raises one hand). Neumeier has created a large-scale dance work, which employs almost one hundred and fifty students of the Moscow Academy of all ages: from primary school students to graduates. Transferring ballet to Moscow, Neumayer, of course, take account of the wider possibilities of the Moscow ballet school and, by his own admission, “sought to demonstrate not only technical but also the artistic ability of all pupils and create, thus, a portrait of the school as a whole.”

The portrait was impressive, though I have to admit that after the premiere that was held at the jubilee evening dedicated to the 85th anniversary of Gennady Rozhdestvensky (an outstanding musician and made music Director and conductor of “the seasons”), the ballet was somewhat loose. Not too seamlessly it fit in the second part of the new teenage athlete Artem Kalistratov and his favorite swimmer Margarita Greceanii, who lost in the development of the role originally created these images to Petr Gorbunov and Anna Lebedeva (the organizers did not bother to name the performers in the program, so in the enumeration of names and surnames may be errors). The actor’s work here has managed to create consistently danced in the two formulations Pyotr Gusev (Clown) and Olga Ladinos (the circus Princess), a promising graduate, successfully danced in the second part of the concert pas de Deux from the ballet “the Nutcracker” (choreography by Vainonen).

Her partner in this pas de Deux was a graduate of the Academy last year, and is now gaining momentum is the current artist of the Bolshoi theatre David Mota Soares. Excellent speaking Brazilian, with the support of recently returned to his duties the new head of ballet Big Maharlika Vasieva, is now preparing to debut in one of the most prestigious parties of the classical repertoire — the party albert in the ballet “Giselle”, so this “warm-up” in the school concert, even though he was not quite incidentally, all, I hope, will give a guy confidence in the first “adult” speech.

The little ballet staged by Petipa in the same year 1900, for the Hermitage theatre, and “the seasons”, is from his ballet “Harlequinade,” or “Millions of harlequin”, Suite from a few years ago, was successfully restored to the school with Yuri Burlaka. It was also shown in the second part of the concert, and with his partner Irina Averina here shone Dmitry Vyskubenko star of this issue, a multiple winner of many international competitions. Starring in the successful film by Dmitry Povolotsky, “My dad Baryshnikov” grew up and unlike your hero has already begun to make a successful ballet career. Received from him suggestions for the placement (there was an offer from the Bolshoi theatre) graduate, according to some, chose Munich, and we, unfortunately, will see this talented dancer up on the stage, now, apparently, not soon.

Recommend to remember for the lovers of ballet and the name of sophomore Mark Chino. They constructed image demonstrated high jump and excellent rotation was impressive, and his performance of the part of the Ocean from the pas-de-Trois “Ocean and pearls” from the famous ballet, Saint-léon the little humpbacked Horse (Gorsky choreography) can be considered almost flawless. This ballet, despite the fact that was first shown at the school concert a year ago, can also be considered a kind of premiere. Created on the Overture-Fantasia of Tchaikovsky’s “Romeo and Juliet” is not very well known choreographer Luciano cannito.

Well, and the work of the school can be recognized as successful.
