Putin called the reasons for the suspension of the project “South stream”

Russian President Vladimir Putin at a meeting with heads of international news agencies in the framework of SPIEF-2016 stated that the gas pipeline “Nord stream 2” is not a alternative to the project “South stream”. The head of state reminded about the circumstances which forced Russia to abandon the construction of South stream.

“We could start laying the pipeline system in the sea, there to spend 9 billion euros, to drown it in the sea, not having the right entry on the Bulgarian territory? Of course, we all realized it, and we stopped further work”, – said Putin. He noted that the construction of the “South stream” refused not Russia, and European politics.

“I must say that it (the North stream 2″ – approx. MK) is not an alternative to South stream. And in this sense it doesn’t compete with anyone,” – said the head of state. According to Putin, this project was conceived to diversify the supply of Russian gas to Europe.
