Ukrainian politics again trying to interfere in purely religious matters. The Verkhovna Rada adopted an appeal to the Patriarch of Constantinople to recognize the schismatic so-called Kiev Patriarchate. And if the early initiators of such projects were made by former President Viktor Yushchenko, now do it former allies of Yanukovych.
The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine on Thursday appealed to the Constantinople Patriarch Bartholomew with a request to recognize the independence of the Ukrainian Church from the Moscow Patriarchate. The draft resolution was approved by 245 deputies.
“I think that Patriarch Bartholomew will not go to such steps, given the scandalous Filaret”
Ukraine currently operates the canonical Ukrainian Orthodox Church (UOC-MP), which is a self-governing Church of the Moscow Patriarchate, and unrecognized by the world Orthodoxy enterprises – Kyiv Patriarchate (UOC KP) and Ukrainian Autocephalous Orthodox Church (UAOC).
Probably, the deputies had in mind unrecognized “Kiev Patriarchate,” headed by a former Hierarch of the Russian Orthodox Church Filaret (in the world Mikhail Denisenko). After Filaret initiated the internal conflict in 1991 and 1992, the former Metropolitan of Kiev was cut off from Sana’a. In 1997, the Council of bishops of the Russian Orthodox Church for schismatic activities excommunicated and anathematized – that was recognized by other local churches.
It Filaret, who calls himself “Patriarch of Kiev and all Rus-Ukraine” is a political supporter of the idea of “independent Church for an independent state.” It seems that the treatment is “European-oriented” of the Verkhovna Rada, contrary to the generally accepted (including in Europe) the principle of separation of Church and state aimed at support of groups of self-proclaimed “Patriarch”.
The split of the Orthodox churches in Ukraine, leaders primogenitum time in Ukraine, the ongoing seizures of churches of Moscow Patriarchate representatives of the non-canonical Church groups. As announced in early June his Holiness the Patriarch of Moscow and all Russia, Kirill, has already captured 31 temple of UPTS of the Moscow Patriarchy, 12 remain in serious condition and can also be captured. 10 June in Ternopil oblast, the Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Moscow Patriarchate, seized by the supporters of the “Kiev Patriarchate” and extremists “Right sector*” (rushed into the temple shouting “Glory to Ukraine! Death to the enemies!”). The claims were in the Kiev-Pechersk Lavra, the residence of the Primate of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church Metropolitan Onufriy, and the Pochayiv Lavra in Western Ukraine.
“The Patriarch is not a magician”
In the canonicity of the UOC of the Moscow Patriarchate reacted sharply to the resolution of the Verkhovna Rada. The Patriarch of Constantinople has no right to accept so-called Kiev Patriarchate canonical Church, and signed the appeal to him with such an appeal, the deputies of the Ukrainian Parliament are not familiar with the Church commandments, told RIA “news” the Chairman of the Synodal information and educational Department of UOC-MP Irpen Bishop Clement (Vecherya).
“The head of the Church of Constantinople is not a magician, and the Patriarch. He has no means only one its a blessing or a stroke of the pen suddenly Raskolnikov to turn from pretenders to the canonical Church with its 2,000-year history – said Lord Clement. – Ukrainian MPs that, unfortunately, do not understand. They think that in the Church as well as in the Verkhovna Rada: I do not like the law is clear, does not fit the Constitution – the remake”.
The interference of authorities in internal Church Affairs and interchurch relations contradicts not only secular law but also to canonical regulations, in turn, stressed the head of the Synodal Department of the Moscow Patriarchate for Church-state relations with society and mass-media Vladimir Legoyda. He recalled that representatives of all canonical churches, including the destination addresses of members of Parliament – the Patriarchate of Constantinople, has been repeatedly recognized as the only canonical Church of Ukraine of the UOC of the Moscow Patriarchate.
“Akhmeta” followed in the footsteps of Yushchenko
It is curious that, according to information on the Council website, the initiators of the appeal to Patriarch Bartholomew delivered two deputies from the Opposition bloc Yuriy Voropaev and Vadim Novinsky. Both the MP figures considered close to the “master of Donbass oligarch Rinat Akhmetov.
The lawyer of Makiyivka Nikolaev last convocation of the Rada was part of the Party of regions, which, as we know, was ruling before the Maidan. Novinsky, a businessman of Russian origin with business interests in the Donetsk region, in 2012 the decree of Viktor Yanukovych was adopted Ukrainian citizenship as “a person with outstanding merits in front of Ukraine”.
Earlier, the chief propagandist of the national Autocephalous Church for the Ukraine was considered the ex-President Viktor Yushchenko.
In 2007, under Yushchenko, “Kyiv Patriarchate” has appealed to the Constantinople Patriarch Bartholomew with a request to “recognize the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the Kyiv Patriarchate as the national and Autocephalous Church of Ukraine.” This same issue was discussed in June 2007 at the meeting of Yushchenko and Bartholomew – for the sake of the then Ukrainian leader arrived in Istanbul.
However, at the meeting of the Patriarch of Constantinople and Denisenko fell through, and the widely publicized Ukrainian media visit of Bartholomew to Kyiv meant only joint prayer of the head of the Church of Constantinople and the then Patriarch of Moscow and all Russia Alexy II. Now in the role of successor to Yushchenko as a “Builder of the Ukrainian Church” is Petro Poroshenko. In April, he urged the representatives of the Ukrainian Council of churches and religious organizations to consider the creation of one local Autocephalous Church. In may, congratulating the head of the “Kiev Patriarchate” by Mikhail Denisenko (Philaret) 50th anniversary service at the Department, Poroshenko said that the Ukrainian Orthodox Church becomes Autocephalous. The Ukrainian President, in his own words, is a parishioner of the UOC of the Moscow Patriarchate.
“Removes barriers that would put Moscow Patriarchate”
Appeal of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, the Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew on the granting of autocephaly of the Ukrainian Church launches “a process” for the positive decision of this question, said the Ukrainian edition of “Browser” Rada Deputy from the party Arseniy Yatseniuk “popular front”, the President of the Ukrainian Association of religious freedom Viktor yelensky.
The Deputy is sure: even the fact that the issue of autocephaly will not be considered initiated on the Constantinople Church pan-Orthodox Council, plays into the hands of “Ukrainian Orthodoxy”. “On the one hand, it inhibits the issue of establishing autocephaly, but on the other hand, removes those barriers, that would supply Moscow Patriarchate”, – said yelensky. In his opinion, the Church of Constantinople could solve this issue single-handedly, without waiting for a consensus decision on which insists Moscow (and that is clearly not in favor of “Kiev Patriarchate”).
“Attempt to add gasoline to the fire of conflict”
Orthodox writer Sergei khudiev believes that the Ukrainian political class is hardly able to imagine the situation, and many of his actions are dictated not by common calculation and desire to do something “Patriotic”.
“Each member of a politically marked man seeks to emphasize how much he is committed to the Ukrainian state, and as strongly supports any measures that look Patriotic, even if they are completely counterproductive and stupid. The main thing is to raise high the flag,” said Hudiev the newspaper VIEW.
As for the such treatment, Khudiyev called it absurd. “This is an attempt to add gasoline to the fire of conflict. Of course, nothing but harm can bring to the Ukrainian state. This senseless behavior. The Primate of the Ukrainian Church, Metropolitan Onufry and the UOC-MP with great difficulty keeps a neutrality, but now the Kiev authorities are literally push them into opposition,” warned the publicist.
“Sanctified” water with psychics in post drank cognac for pork”
In turn, the political scientist, member of the presidential Council for interethnic relations Bogdan Bezpalko called the appeal to Happy strange, because Church matters are not regulated neither MPs nor the government. “There is interference in the Affairs of the Church. In 90-e years such interference has led to a formidable split the Ukrainian Church into two components, one of which is headed by Filaret and the other with Andrew,” said Bezpalko newspaper VIEW.
He noted that in Ukraine, political pressure on canonical Church never faltered. An attribute of statehood, many political leaders saw the creation of the Church, not connected with Moscow. Therefore, the main objective was to break all ties with Russia and the Moscow Patriarchate.
Meanwhile, he says, there is no dependence of the UOC MP from Moscow, and this relationship is “purely symbolic, canonical and mystical in nature.” And it is this nature most annoying followers of Ukrainian nationalism that seek to transform the Church from the Christian community in some attribute of national life.
“All this involves a pan-Orthodox Council to which the delegation of the Russian Orthodox Church is definitely not going. Most of the analysts this Cathedral is regarded as a project of the Patriarch of Constantinople and as an attempt to establish a certain Bartholomew the beginning of his throne in relation to the other Orthodox hierarchs. Obviously, going to play and provide the schismatic Philaret’s education canonical status. But I think that Bartholomew will not go to such steps, given the scandalous Filaret, who behaves outside of the human being in Christianity. Known for his scandalous antics, when he “consecrated” water on the river with psychics or when, during Great lent at the presentation, drank brandy and ate his pork,” said Bezpalko.
