Bridge Duderhof channel will now be named after the first President of the Chechen Republic Akhmad Kadyrov. This decision was made by the authorities of Saint Petersburg, despite the protests of politicians and citizens.
The Governor of St. Petersburg Georgy Poltavchenko has signed the decree about assignment of a name of Ahmad Kadyrov, the bridge across the Duderhof canal. About it RIA Novosti reported the press Secretary of the Governor Andrey Kibito.
Explaining the decision, Kibito said, the name of each of the hero of Russia has the right to be immortalized in any city in the country (after Akhmad Kadyrov is a Hero of Russia posthumously – ed). “And it does not violate the traditions of St. Petersburg, but rather emphasizes our respect for the history of Russia and the role of personality in history”, – said the press Secretary, urging not to divide the heroes on a national basis.
The Deputy of Legislative Assembly of the city of the party “Yabloko” Boris Vishnevsky has called the decision of the Smolny a big mistake as it goes against public opinion. “Facts are known: almost 90 thousand signatures against the Internet, rallies, “live” signature. (…) When in this situation, the decision is clear, contrary to public opinion, it seems to me that this decision is a mistake,” he said.
To name the unnamed bridge over the Duderhof canal in honor of his father, the current head of Chechnya, Akhmad Kadyrov, the Governor recommended that the toponymic Commission of St. Petersburg. In this June 6 in the Northern capital held a rally against the decision to perpetuate the name of the first President of Chechnya. In addition, more than 91 thousand people have signed a petition on the website change.org.
Against the name of the bridge in honor of Kadyrov informed openly many opposition MPs, as well as the actor Oleg Basilashvili and directed by Alexander Sokurov. In particular, he noted that the residents of St. Petersburg with indignation find the names of the odious family on the city map, as the younger Kadyrov is the shadow of political assassinations, the Islamization of Chechnya and violations of the Constitution.”
The first idea of assigning a street in St. Petersburg named Kadyrov a year ago was expressed by the Deputy of Legislative Assembly of the city Vitaly Milonov. Then his proposal was rejected due to the fact that Kadyrov has no relation to Petersburg.
