In St. Petersburg launched the world’s most powerful nuclear icebreaker

The Russian atomic icebreaker “Arktika” was on Thursday launched in Saint-Petersburg. It is the most powerful ship of this type in the world.

Baptism icebreaker was held by the rector of the Nikolo-Bogoyavlensky Naval Cathedral. The ceremony was attended by the speaker of the Federation Council Valentina Matvienko. According to her, increase icebreaking fleet Russia will allow such a vessel to reach a qualitatively new level of development of the Arctic.

Icebreaker “Arktika” project 22220 was founded in late 2013. Its displacement will be 33.5 thousand tons. The icebreaker will be equipped with a double-reactor power plant with the main source of steam from the reactor installation RITM-200 with capacity of 175 MW. He will be able to conduct the trial by ice with thickness up to three meters.
