Four battalions of NATO near the Russian borders do not underestimate

NATO adopted a decision on deployment (on a rotational basis) four battalions of the Alliance in Poland and the Baltic States in response to the so-called Russian aggression. The number of placed troops may seem insignificant, but the significance of this event is extremely important from the point of view of the defense of our borders.

A diplomatic source close to NATO, confirmed to RIA “Novosti” that the placement of the vanguards of NATO in Poland and the Baltic States will start in January 2017. The defence Ministers of 28 countries – members of NATO approved the deployment of one battalion of the Alliance on a rotational basis in Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia and Poland.

“There are four battalions, it is possible to increase the grouping for this database”

As stated by the head of the Pentagon Ashton Carter on the results of the Ministerial meeting of NATO, the main countries for the formation of four battalions will be the United States, Germany and the UK.

Together with the notification about deployment of NATO troops in Poland and the Baltic States, the Alliance adopted another decision on the “Eastern question”. On Wednesday, the NATO leadership and representatives of Kiev authorities adopted a Comprehensive plan to support military reforms in Ukraine, the implementation of which will be sent to the advisors of the Alliance. This was stated by Stoltenberg following the meeting of the Commission NATO – Ukraine at the level of defence Ministers. According to the Secretary General of NATO, reform of the Ministry of defense of Ukraine will be completed in 2020. “We are confident that when the reform plan is implemented, the Armed forces of Ukraine will fully meet the criteria for NATO”, – quotes Stoltenberg TASS.

In turn, the head of the defense Ministry of Ukraine Stepan Poltorak said that Ukraine at the meetings with NATO representatives raised the issue of their participation in the initiatives of the Alliance to strengthen presence in the Black sea, however, the specifics on it yet.

Continuous presence

Officials in the United States has time to comment on the imminent deployment of NATO troops in Eastern Europe.

According to the US Ambassador at NATO Douglas Lewt, the number of each unit deployed in Poland and the Baltic States, can range from 800 to 1 thousand people, they will replace each other every 6-9 months, but will be provided with a continuous presence of the battalions in these countries.

The exact composition of the battalions have not yet been determined. However, the representative of the Alliance said: the NATO leadership expects that they will have the ability to defend itself and to have certain banneradvertising capabilities and air defenses and artillery.

The German edition of DW stressed that the increased presence of NATO troops in the East of the Alliance to deter Russia.

Expansion during “Anaconda”

The decision about the deployment of additional battalions was made when on the territory of Poland are the largest in the history of NATO exercises “Anaconda-2016”. The main part of the exercise involving aircraft, ships, military equipment and military 31 thousand (12 thousand from Poland) from 18 NATO countries and 5 countries in the program “Partnership for peace” will be held in Poland from 7 to 17 June. The exercises involved 3 thousands of pieces of military equipment, 105 aircraft and helicopters and 12 vehicles. Recall that the exercises “Anaconda” are since 2006 every two years.

The correlation of the military potentials of Russia and NATO

“For a possible attack on Russia”

Associate Professor of political science and sociology REU them. Plekhanov, an expert of Association of military political scientists Alexander perendzhiev notes that, in the first approximation, it may seem that taking place near the borders of Russia is not threatening her, however the situation may look different.

He explained that the exercise Anakonda was in the context of further development of NATO’s military infrastructure along the borders with Russia. The expert expressed confidence that the project of deployment of advanced units of the Alliance in the composition of free battalions were ready to conduct military exercises. And the information about that deployment will start in January next year, and not later, indicates the formation of appropriate funding sources.

“Why was this decision made? I understand that there was a meeting of defense Ministers of the NATO countries. Apparently, this meeting began a search of sources of funding for these battalions. I think this creates an information agenda ahead of the NATO summit in Warsaw. This shows how quickly issues are resolved,” said Perendzhiev the newspaper VIEW.

With regard to threats to Russia itself, the expert considers that while it creates the Foundation to put pressure on our border. “Where four battalions, and then on their basis it is possible to increase the grouping. Therefore it should be seen as a threat. Near the Russian border appear units that are not units of a particular country, but as NATO troops. And it says targeting against the country where they are located. To talk about protecting strange. Unable to defend themselves these States. And NATO troops can come to the rescue. And if they do they get deployed – so it’s not for protection, but the build-up of forces for a possible attack on Russia”, – believes Alexander perendzhiev.

Protest In Moscow

Russia has repeatedly expressed concern over NATO’s expansion to the East. In Moscow noted that it violates the Founding act Russia – NATO. Press Secretary of the Russian President, Dmitry Peskov, said earlier that Russia for anybody not a threat, but will not leave without attention of the West.

Director of Department of European cooperation Ministry of foreign Affairs Andrey Kelin said Wednesday that “if the NATO summit in Warsaw will finally approve the deployment of four battalions of the Alliance in the Baltic States and Poland, it will be one of the topics of discussion at the next meeting of the Council Russia – NATO”. “Military activity was the subject of the previous meeting held on 20 April,” he recalled, adding that the issue of conducting a Council meeting “is still now being discussed”.
