“As a politician, Medina does not understand that understand toponymists and linguists. In oral speech the name erased, like a coin, and the function of historical monument in the right measure has not been,” – said the newspaper VIEW Professor Michael gorbanevsky. He commented on the proposal to rename streets with names of Soviet times.

On Wednesday, the Minister of culture Vladimir Medinsky launched an initiative to rename the streets of the capital, which still carry the names of prominent figures of the October revolution.

The Minister suggested to name streets in honor of Grand Duke Sergei Alexandrovich (Romanov) and his wife, the Holy venerable Martyr Elizaveta Feodorovna.

“The first Chairman of the Palestinian society was the brother of Alexander III, the Governor of Moscow Grand Duke Sergei Alexandrovich Romanov, he was killed by terrorists. His work was continued by wife Elizabeth Feodorovna, which after the revolution was brutally killed by revolutionaries, and is now one of the most revered saints” – said Medinsky, reports RIA “Novosti”.

“Perhaps it is necessary to reflect on and present representatives of the Moscow authorities. For the names of some of these terrorists and their associates are still on our streets, but we have no street Sergei Alexandrovich, nor the streets of St. Elizabeth Feodorovna, ” he said.

The reaction of the first Deputy Chairman of the CPRF Central Committee Ivan Melnikov was immediate.

“It is a pity that colleagues suggested to the Minister that the stuffing is similar to those in the discussion field on a background of hot protest and a difficult socio-economic situation is nothing like a provocative attempt to destabilize the situation” – quoted Melnikova “Interfax”.

Communist wonders why the new Minister started his public activities with such statements, as there are a lot of unresolved topical issues of the cultural life of the country.

“It is surprising that Mr. Medina did not want to try to start their activities in the new role, at least with something other than this much-loved theme of renaming of streets,” – said Melnikov.

The head of the Moscow Helsinki group Lyudmila Alekseyeva also spoke out against assigning new names to the capital’s streets bearing the names of terrorists-revolutionaries, without taking into account the views of residents of the capital. In addition, Alexeyeva called “omen of the new age” the proposal of the Minister of culture.

“It’s a sign of new time, when not with their ideology, we are trying to borrow either from the Church or from our old history. But I would recommend Vladimir Medinsky do better to inform residents of the capital’s streets about the individuals after whom these streets are named,” said prominent human rights activist.

In the expert community the Minister’s proposal has also caused confusion.

Why not all names can be changed and what is going on with place names in Russian cities, in an interview with the newspaper look told the Chairman of the Board of the Guild of linguists – experts on documentary and informational disputes, one of the main developers of the law “On naming territorial units, streets and metro stations of Moscow Professor Mikhail gorbanevsky.

OPINION: Mikhail Viktorovich, how wise is it now to rename those streets?

Michael gorbanevsky: I am familiar with Vladimir Medinsky and talked with him just in connection with geographical names. And, on the one hand, his statement does not surprise me because I know his position. As well as his mistakes in this area that I repeatedly pointed out to Vladimir Medinsky. On the other hand, I’m surprised. That the Minister of culture to do? We have all the right libraries, museums?

OPINION: What can explain such a keen interest in “signs”?

M. G.: you Know, Medina and his associates, speaking about the fate of some geographical names is not just used for this thesis: tablets with names of streets in honor of the Bolshevik leaders and heroes is a free banner in the elections for the Communist party. Well what else is there to say?

Professor Michael gorbanevsky believes that any renaming should be treated with great care (Photo: Roman Romanov)

OPINION: Maybe nothing wrong with these renames?

M. G.: you Know, this isn’t tablets. And that we are back in times of stagnation and already drifting towards Stalinism. And it is not only in geographical names. We are taught to effeminacy. I’m writing a book called: “Walking together. The new Putin-era Newspeak”. Me as a linguist very interested in the style of Newspeak. Kind of a mixture of corruption, criminal violations of the laws and arbitrariness, when government officials use official position to influence the outcome of elections, openly manipulative quite decently called administrative resource. A new phrase “energy superpower”, actively perpetuated through the media, especially through television, in mass consciousness, translated from the new Newspeak only means to secure Russia as a supplier of resources in more developed countries. Basic embezzlement is now referred to as improper spending of budget funds, and the determination by the bureaucrats, elites and clans (i.e., not chosen in free elections), who should be an MP, in this new Newspeak, called the ruling party. The power come your Newspeak.

OPINION: does the law change street names?

M. G.: the Man who came into the power of Duma, you must understand that you need to be a Commissar in a leather jacket and a dusty hat, but at least know the Russian legislation. And the replacement of street names according to the law is possible only in three cases. The first – restoration of the historical name. Second – the elimination of odnoimennoy. Third – change the status of the object: for example, when the alley turns into the Avenue.

I also live in Moscow on the street Kibalchicha not experiencing this delight. Of course, he is known as the author of the project of a jet engine, but Kibalchich still and personally bombs stuffed terrorists of the “people’s will”.

OPINION: You are one of the main authors of the law “On naming territorial units, streets and metro stations of Moscow. Why was it decided to impose such harsh restrictions?

M. G.: the Law was passed in October 1997. And when we wrote this law, we were influenced by the bitter experience of the Soviet period, therefore, put in quite severe restrictions on the replacement names. Because too were heaped in the Soviet years.

OPINION: it Turns out that, in accordance with the law the metro station “Voykovskaya” rename will not be easy.

Any name – first landmark. As a politician, Medina does not understand that understand toponymists and linguists. In oral speech the name erased, like a coin, and the function of historical monument in the measure no longer has. But it turns stupid expression: “You Krupskoy go?”, “How can I get on Solzhenitsyn?”, “Shop Kadyrov hours work”? This is absurd!

LOOK: by the Way, about the street Kadyrov in Moscow. Isn’t that a violation of the law “On naming territorial units, streets and metro stations of Moscow?

M. G.: Of Course. The street in Butovo were not allowed to call the name of Kadyrov. It was unlawful act. The law clearly States that the memorial name, you can assign only 10 years after the care of the human life. Toponymic toponymic Pantheon or the Thistle on the map of Moscow – a legacy of Bolshevism.

OPINION: Well, judging by the names of streets in Russian cities, many politicians do not understand this.

M. G.: Governor of Novgorod region Sergey Mitin, through the deputies told me amazing things. I wrote to him that there is a lovely ancient town of Staraya Russa, where Dostoevsky has created “the Brothers Karamazov”, but it from 200 old street names restored there was only one pre-revolutionary name. Everything else is Russia in miniature: the St. Petersburg – ulitsa Karla Libknekhta, Kresttsy – Karl Marx, Gostinodvorskaya – Engels, street Pavement is the street Sverdlov and so on.

And you know what I said? “We won’t cancel these names, because them on the lips was going to attack the Soviet soldiers.” What they were? With the name Karl Liebknecht?!

VIEW: AND still, whether there is at Medina a chance to get the renaming of streets?

M. G.: For this he will have to seek changes to the legislation. But to start such work is long overdue: scientists your sensible proposals produced five (!) years ago, but they locked up the Moscow officials! And Luzhkov and Sobyanin’s toponymy has been living as a step-daughter and not as a carefully fostered daughter…

OPINION: whether it is Necessary to consider the opinions of residents when it comes to renaming streets?

M. G.: Historical place names should be studied and protected to the same extent and in the same way as all the other monuments, they must be restored (restored), together with other monuments of the past – without much “street” discussions, in the framework of the local “toponymic legislation and on the basis of professional scientific knowledge, scientific expertise and practical recommendations. When, for example, restored the ancient temples, no one is conducting a survey of the population. And no one finds out from the residents how to do Church – white, yellow or brown. Let the pie bakes the pastry and stitch boots the shoemaker. If society delegates the right doctors to heal, teachers to teach, the scholars, and not someone else, must explore our past. And on the basis of examination to recommend the authorities to make a decision. This is a civilized way: no visa specialists, toponymists changes in the capital should not be.

OPINION: a Lot of problems creating the renaming of streets?

M. G.: No. “Toponymic restoration” organizational represents the most simple and financially the least costly part of the whole long and in General a difficult work to restore and preserve the historical and cultural landscape of Russian historical towns and villages.
