Prime Minister of Abkhazia Artur mikvabia ruled out a referendum on joining Russia, commenting on the vote on this issue in South Ossetia, scheduled for 2017. According to the head of the Abkhazian government, his country “is another story”.
Mikvabia in an interview with RIA Novosti said that Abkhazia would be an independent state, while at the same time “reliable and faithful ally of great Russia”. “We deserve independence,” – said the Prime Minister in conversation with journalists.
“The referendum in South Ossetia is the idea of unification of North and South Ossetia, – said the “MK” Vice-President of the Center for political technologies, Alexei Makarkin. – They have a shared national identity, a sense of conventionality of borders and the desire to unite into one large Ossetia. The Kremlin is not profitable due to the fact that now Russia would like something to negotiate with the West on the East of Ukraine. This is being actively discussed. There were some chances. In this situation, another referendum creates problems: in the West say that Russia wants to Annex part of Georgia, because the international community, with the exception of a few countries recognize South Ossetia as part of Georgia. On the other hand, if Russia would be unable really to attach anything – it will be a new big scandal – I’d be disappointed Ossetians themselves”.
“As for Abkhazia, I think that this referendum is not relevant at all, – said the expert. – Very often the name of Abkhazia and South Ossetia say a comma, consider the two informal protectorates of Russia, exactly the same, but in fact they have significant differences. Ossetian idea is an Association within the big South Ossetia, and the Abkhazian idea is the separate existence of an independent state under Russian protection. Abkhazians would be kind of old Montenegro. I don’t take modern Montenegro, which completes the process of joining the North Atlantic Alliance. I mean Montenegro, for example, the late nineteenth century, when Alexander III said that Russia is the only ally – is Prince Nicholas of Montenegro. Abkhazians would like to do something like resort States on the Black sea, where the sun, beaches, tourists, etc. Now actively there come tourists from Russia. They wish that it was international center. Another question, how it is implemented. It is not good for many reasons. There and the unrecognized status, and corruption.”
“In Abkhazia, the Abkhazians do not want a referendum – said in a conversation with “MK” Alexey Makarkin. – This does not mean that they are against Russia. They are all over, they want to be friends, but friends with guns. This corresponds with Russian interests. Russia would not want a new escalation, the new big problems. Once Abkhazia does not want it, so good. Their status is satisfied. Moreover, Russia has a significant influence on their political processes.”Related posts:
