For Bryansk and Krasnodar come up with a “Ukrainian identity”

One of the most prominent Ukrainian politicians, Donetsk Governor Pavlo Zhebrivsky demanded that Russia “return” Kursk, Bryansk, Rostov and Krasnodar, arguing that there “is Ukrainian identity, Ukrainian mentality”. Experts in response advised the Zhebrivsky to make territorial claims and to Canada.

On Tuesday, the head of the Donetsk military-civil administration (the territory controlled by the Kiev authorities) Pavel Zhebrivsky demanded that Russia return the “Ukrainian native land”. “Sooner or later we must return the native Ukrainian land – Kurschinu, Bryansk, Voronichin, Rostopshina and Krasnodar Krai. This is where there is the Ukrainian nature, Ukrainian mentality,” said zhebrivskyi radio “Era”.

“On Kuban really moved Zaporozhye Cossacks, who performed in the newly annexed lands of the functions of the frontier service. Catherine gave them lands in the gift for service”

In addition, zhebrivskyi called the incorrect call to “get rid” of uncontrolled Kiev territories of Donbass, to the rest of the country “received the drive and the direction of fast development and integration in the European community”.

We will remind, in September, barely went on this post zhebrivskyi promised to Ukrainize all residents of Donbass. As a sample the official cited the village of Druzhkovka, where there are no more Russian schools. In April, he again attracted the attention, urging to return the Donbass by a major war with Russia. In his opinion, “today the Ukrainian army is capable and ready for two weeks to clear the area temporarily occupied by the Russian terrorist forces”.

Recall that until now, high-level officials has not made territorial claims to Russia. This is currently allowed only radical nationalists like the leader of “Right sector**” Dmitry Yarosh. As written in the June 2014 VZGLYAD: “According to him, Kursk, Voronezh region and the Kuban is ethnic Ukrainian territory. Why? Because they speak Ukrainian.”

“Absolutely groundless statement”

Head of the Department of history of Ukraine 20-30-ies of XX century the Institute of history of NAS of Ukraine, doctor of historical Sciences, Professor Stanislav Kulchitsky, also known as the author of school history textbooks, said the newspaper VIEW the claims of Zhebrivsky: “Kursina, Belgorodschina – Yes, indeed, it was the Slobodskaya Ukraine. It stretched from the present Kharkiv, Sumy regions further North of Russia. But it was the territory of the Muscovite state, which during all XVII century was populated by Ukrainians who had fled there on free land, tax-free”.

“But where already there now remains, “Ukrainian identity”, if there actually is long gone Ukrainians?” – surprised the historian. He reminds the people fled from the Polish masters in Russia for freedom and landed on these shores. According to him, in 20-ies even raised the question of the accession of these lands, but Moscow did not go for it, and the Ukrainians were assimilated completely.

What language prefer to use in everyday communication the inhabitants of the several countries of the former SSSRV contrast Slobodian says Kulchitsky, Kuban really more recently in historical terms was Ukrainian. “For example, according to the census of 1926. But then there was a famine, and the next census of 1937 and 1939 re-recorded in the North Caucasus only four percent of Ukrainians. Those who came there between 1926 and 1939, and all indigenous people were obliged to be Russian. When in Russia they say that the Holodomor was not only in Ukraine, it is true, – said the expert. – In the Kuban preserved in museums, they admit that there was a famine.”

Kulchitsky reminded that I have been to Kuban. “From personal communication I know that there are still people of the older generation, who did not forget the Ukrainian language. At home, in everyday life, they “Balakan” in Ukrainian. But these people stayed there only a few percent. The rest is Russian. So what can be done today? Absolutely nothing.”

By the way, as reported on Tuesday, “Ukrainska Pravda”, the citizens of Ukraine were more likely to speak Ukrainian, but almost 40% of the native language is called Russian, it follows from a survey conducted by the Razumkov Center 11-23 Dec 2015 in all regions of Ukraine. “The majority – 60% – of citizens consider Ukrainian their native language, 15% – Russian, 22% Ukrainian and Russian equally, 2% of respondents believe native other languages. In 2006 the Ukrainian language as native said 52% of respondents, Russian – 31%, Russian and Ukrainian in equal measure – 16%, other languages 1%”, – notes the edition.

“For example, was Pskov Ukraine”

The desire of the Kiev-appointed “Governor of the Donetsk region” Zhebrivsky “the return of the native Ukrainian land,” by which he means not only the border with Ukraine Russia (Kursk, Bryansk, Voronezh and Rostov region), and Krasnodar Krai, obviously needs not only in historical and political science, but in medical comments, said the newspaper LOOK member of the expert Council of the Institute of socio-economic and political studies (ISSI Foundation), chief editor of magazine “Historian” Vladimir Rudakov.

According to him, “Governor, without the rest of the province, one can only sympathize with is if we talk about the medical side of the question.” In all other respects we are not just dealing with the falsification and substitution of concepts, but with clear historical provocation.

“Of the cities mentioned zhebrivskyi, the most ancient is the Kursk: it is mentioned in the sources since the XI century, and, of course, nowhere is there evidence that this “Ukrainian city”. And such term was not”, – said Rudakov. The Voronezh and Belgorod were founded in the late XVI century, during the reign of Fedor Ivanovich, as strongholds of the Russian Borderlands, and the growth appeared on the map of the Russian Empire in the XVIII century, in the reign of Elizabeth. “What do these cities have in Ukraine, to Ukrainian entities and mentality”, I don’t really understand,” he says.

Rudakov has reminded, that until the XVI century “Ukraine” (in small letters) called a variety of cross-border (i.e., outlying) areas. “For example, was “Pskov Ukraine”, which, as we understand it, had no relation to the Ukraine, which today exist on the map of Europe”, – said the expert. And only in the XVII century Ukraine began to be called the marginal land of the Commonwealth – including the middle Dnieper.

Got Kuban “in the gift” for the service of the Empire

As for the Krasnodar territory, the Kuban, it is even more bizarre statements, says Rudakov. “As you know, the Russian Empire annexed the Kuban in 1783 – the same year when, defeating the Crimean khanate, annexed the Crimean Peninsula. On Kuban really moved the Cossacks, including Zaporozhye, who performed in the newly annexed lands of the functions of the frontier service. Catherine the great of land in the Kuban gave them as a gift for his service. But these lands were given to the Dar for service to the Russian Empire. Ukraine as a subject of international law at the time also did not exist, Ukrainians and the Cossacks did not consider themselves. So I don’t even know what can be discussed” – said the chief editor of magazine “Historian”.

“We have now in Russia is home to a huge Ukrainian Diaspora. But this does not mean that all of the places where these people live compactly, we should immediately transfer to Ukraine. Are two different things. With the same success you can declare the Ukrainian territories of the places of compact residence of immigrants from Ukraine in the USA and Canada. It would be even interesting to see, how would you react to such claims from Kiev the local authorities!”

“Why are adults, probably with higher education, I discuss this topic? The reason can be only one – political. This is an attempt to revive old or create new myths, and maybe even to embody them into real political decision”, – said Rudakov.

“The fact that the current policy of Kiev will sooner or later begin to make claims on certain Russian territory, it was clear already then, when this government first came, – said the chief editor of the magazine. – Because one of the goals of the Maidan as time was to create near our borders, aggressive anti-Russian-minded environment. If the current Kiev authorities lacked the resources would not rule out, after some time, they would have attempted to even begin to recapture these territories. Fortunately, the capabilities of the Russian army known to them”.

That is why, the expert believes, “we’ll be a long time to deal with pseudo-nationalist fantasies. From the outside it looks not so much historical manifestations of schizophrenia, how many elements of provocation and blatant politicking of the insane who strike first of all on interests of the Ukraine”, – concluded the expert.
