Oleg Tabakov and Ksenia Sobchak discuss the exhibition.

Leon Bakst, in the West known as Leon Bakst, became famous primarily as a set designer of “Russian seasons” Diaghilev. Citizen of the world, the artist feel at home wherever you are in St. Petersburg, Paris, Venice, London or new York. Collaborating with Claude Debussy, Alexander Benois, IDA Rubinstein, Isadora Duncan, Bakst became a star of his time. He is known not only as a designer but as a painter, portraitist, a master of book and magazine graphics, interior designer and Creator of high fashion. So imagine how it was difficult for the curators to create an exhibition revealing the personality of the artist to the fullest!

— Half a century ago I began to study painting at the art historian Dmitry Sarabyanova and immediately fell in love with Bakst, says “MK” exhibition curator, Director of the Institute of modern Russian culture at the University of southern California John Boult. — On the one hand, he was a radical person, on the other — neither fish nor fowl. He was born in Grodno and was telling everyone that Peter. Was wealthy, having a lot of orders, but always complained of poverty. A Jew by religion, the artist easily adopted Lutheranism in order to marry the daughter of Pavel Tretyakov Lyubov Gritsenko, and after the divorce quickly returned to Judaism. Bakst — ambivalent figure with a kind of tragic in a way. He was more sad than fun. Today, he rejoiced to see the large-scale retrospective exhibition.

This is not the first exhibition of the artist this year: recently in the Russian Museum project has died down (a hundred items), strongly impressed both experts and simple lovers of painting. But Moscow exhibition wins not only the number of jobs — 250 of them — but their uniqueness: many of the first brought to Russia from Western museums and private collections. Among them the Centre Pompidou in Paris, London’s Victoria and albert Museum, the Israel Museum… collectors Of their works of Bakst lent Petr Aven, Nina Lobanov-Rostov, Mikhail Seslavinsky, Konstantin Ernst.

Most of the exhibits presented in the main Museum building, the rest in the Department of private collections. Work is located at chronology. In the first room even six-foot visitors will have to tilt your head to consider small sketches for the play “Orpheus”. The hanging is reminiscent of an antique frieze, appropriate to the spirit of the ancient Greek myth of the singer. Next across the wall from floor to ceiling, stretched emerald curtain for the Drama theatre komissarjevskaya. Yes, a little faded, but still conveys the flavor of the summer forest.

The center of the room is littered with mannequins in costumes, created based on sketches by Bakst: they stand out for outfits Vaslav Nijinsky in the role of Ghost of the rose and Japanese dolls for Faith Trefilovoy for the ballet “the Fairy doll”. And fancy dresses and theatre costumes for the ballet “Tamara”, “Scheherazade” and “the Sleeping beauty” — from the collection of fashion historian Alexander Vasiliev. Collected a gallery of portraits of artists — Sergei Diaghilev, Andrei Bely, Zinaida Gippius, graphics Bakst, including the design of the magazines Mir iskusstva, Zolotoe Runo, Apollon. But all this work is known, but rare are early landscapes and decorative panels.

— In love with the old and in Oriental art, Leon Bakst has combined the extravagance of modernity with a sense of proportion and common sense — says the Director of the Pushkin Museum to them. Pushkin Marina Loshak. Is a unique mixture of cultures and different eras have brought him enormous success in Russia, Europe and America. When creating exhibitions we had one point of prohibition — American collection, a very rich and need for this project. Unfortunately, poor Schneerson still not let us live in peace, and we cannot cooperate with American museums. I hope everything will change soon. We already have ideas about how to do the Bakst exhibition in large European museums, which can take the American things. Thus we enrich the idea of our favorite artist.
