The second President of Ukraine Leonid Kuchma will once again be under investigation. “In this case, no one denies that he (Kuchma) may be responsible for their actions or inactions… That is in our country no one is untouchable”, the Prosecutor General said during a speech on TV. Yuriy Lutsenko finally waited for his hour of triumph. The story of his relationship with Leonid Kuchma’s longtime and controversial: in fact, in the current policy the attorney General got on the wave antikuchmovskie sentiment of the late 90s. Lutsenko was one of the activists of the movement “Ukraine without Kuchma”. Becoming Minister of interior during the presidency of Viktor Yushchenko, Lutsenko within a year, said that finally, on the basis of which in relation to the ex-President can initiate criminal proceedings. “There are materials that are directly and immediately show that direct citizen Kuchma on the testimony of a citizen Chechetov pushed illegally against the state property Fund for the acquisition of huge economic entities of Ukraine in favor of his immediate environment”, — reported then the Minister of internal Affairs. In particular, he stated that Victor Pinchuk with Kuchma illegally privatized Kryvorizhstal. However, to a serious criminal prosecution of the second President then it never came as efforts by the Ministry of interior was not enough, the job was to engage the Prosecutor General’s office, and she’s not willing to do that.

Lutsenko dreams almost came true in 2011, when during the reign of Yanukovych suddenly decided to put an end in business about murder of journalist Gongadze. Then Leonid Kuchma was charged with abuse of power: he allegedly gave high-ranking employees of the interior Ministry’s illegal order, which, according to investigators, led to the murder of an opposition journalist. However, Lutsenko himself at that point was accused of abuse of power, because of a “sense of comradeship” had no enthusiasm for the involvement of Kuchma to justice. He believed that the case against the second President is a farce. And so it went, until the court case against Kuchma did not make it to the end of 2011 the Pechersky court of Kiev recognized illegal initiation of proceedings. But the thing Lutsenko brought to an end. And ex-Minister of internal Affairs had to Maidan to sit on the benches.

But now, as attorney General, Lutsenko picked up old cases of illegal privatization and threatens to put the same “grandfather of Ukrainian politics”, despite his achievements in the contact group in Minsk agreements. Why all of a sudden his first object to “anti-corruption revelations” Lutsenko chose a man, twelve years as separated from power, “MK” asked the expert:

Konstantin BONDARENKO, Ukrainian political scientist:

— Obviously, he decided on a personal level. Lutsenko, all the while demanding to initiate a criminal case against Leonid Kuchma, had for him an old hostility — from the time of the action “Ukraine against Kuchma”. Why he just now remembered the old case? Obviously, this is an attempt to move the arrow with the current situation of corruption from the past. Need, on the one hand, to show the performance, on the other — to divert attention from the problems of modernity.
