Thursday, June 2, in France, the ceremony of transfer of one of two built for the Russian helicopter “Mistral” to Egypt. The ship, formerly known as “Vladivostok”, now bears a new name – “Gamal Abdel Nasser”, in honor of the second Egyptian President. It is expected that Cairo in September, will buy from France and the second “Mistral”, named successor of Nasser, Anwar Sadat (previously the ship was called “Sevastopol). Egypt will thus become the first and only country in the region with similar kinds of ships.

“Ship “Gamal Abdel Nasser” will leave Saint-Nazaire in the coming days in Egypt accompanied by the two transport ships with new generation equipment developed by our company”, – told “MK” the press-Secretary of the French company DCNS Emmanuel Godet. – Before arriving at the port of Alexandria, “Gamal Abdel Nasser” will take part in the exercises conducted jointly by the naval forces of Egypt and France.

That in Cairo interested in the purchase of “Mistral”, French media reported in August last year. Among the potential buyers were listed and other countries up to Australia, but in the end the deal was made with the Egyptians. Egypt is long and close contact with France in matters of arms procurement: the fight against terrorism and security issues — key aspects of bilateral relations, noted in this regard, Francois Hollande. However, many experts expressed doubt that the ships built for the Pacific fleet of the Russian Federation, can be in demand and fully used by other countries, except Russia.

Moreover, much of the “stuffing” of the ship was made in Russia. However, it is already known that Cairo intends to complement purchased from the French “Mistral” the Russian technologies, in particular, electronic equipment, means of communication etc. All these ships had previously been returned to Russia through France, refused to fulfill obligations under the contract.

“The Russian equipment was returned at the end of last year in full. Were also fully refunded your money – 949,7 million euros, according to the Commission of the National Assembly”, – said the “MK” Emmanuel Godet.

We will remind that the contract on manufacturing the French “Mistral” for Russia was signed in 2011, under President Nicolas Sarkozy. About the “suspension” as it was called in Paris, – the supply of ships, and then on its abolition it became known in 2014. This decision of the new French administration of Francois Hollande was made in connection with events in Ukraine and the European Union’s assessment of Moscow’s role in them.

Many opposition politicians in France then subjected to criticism the decision of the President, arguing that the termination of the contract, not only will not affect the Kremlin’s position on Ukraine, but also cause reputational and financial damage to their own country. But the official did not give up, Paris; Moscow also said that “Mistral” does not are of critical importance.

In 2015, the two countries announced on the final decision of this question.
