Poland does not want to renew the contract with “Gazprom” after 22 years

The Polish Cabinet decided not to renew expiring in 2022 long-term contract with Gazprom for the supply of Russian blue fuel to Poland. However, in announcing the decision, the representative of the Polish government on the development of strategic energy infrastructure Piotr Naimski hinted that this decision could be reviewed if the price of Russian gas will be attractive.

The plans of Poland to abandon long-term contracts with Russia Naimski told the conference devoted to investments in Eastern Europe.

“The Cabinet intends to strive to ensure that long-term contracts are a thing of the past… But if the price of Russian gas is quite competitive, short-term contracts with “Gazprom” it is possible” – quotes the member of the Polish government TASS.

According to him, terminal liquefied natural gas in świnoujście, designed for delivery of five billion cubic meters of gas annually, will help Poland to abandon a long-term contract with “Gazprom”.

“Another option is the implementation of the project Baltic Pipe, which implies the unification of the Polish, Danish and Norwegian gas transporting infrastructure. This project will allow the country to buy up to 10 billion cubic meters of gas per year” – said Piotr Naimski.

Under the contract with Gazprom until 2022 Poland is able to annually purchase up to 10.2 billion cubic meters of natural gas, but in 2015 the Republic because of the high prices bought in Russia only 8 billion cubic meters of gas. The rest of the natural resources Poland has bought in Qatar, and part of the gas produced on their own.
