Estonia has proposed to NATO a new model of relations with Russia – and this is no less than a model of “deterrence”, which should become the “new normal”. To intimidate Russia offer those very people, which, as recognized by the NATO remained an anti-Russian phobias. Such proposals sound in a time when the countries of Western Europe declaring the necessity of dialogue with Russia.
Prime Minister of Estonia Taavi Rõivas in an interview with German newspaper Die Welt said that NATO should become the “new normal” deterrence of Russia in response to alleged military threat from its side.
“The Baltic States could take very good place in terms of cooperation with Russia, but their stupid heads do not realize that from the discharge, they only lose”
Bullying as a norm
He called the necessary accommodation in Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania battalion in NATO. “Spaces can not be. Deterrence should be the new normality,” he said.
This week the foreign Minister of Russia Sergey Lavrov said that Moscow is conducting an independent multi-vector foreign policy, and intends to take all necessary steps against the threats to national security.
Meanwhile, in the beginning of the week us media reported that after the United States decided to send to Eastern Europe one battalion instead of two, NATO could find allies in Europe, who would be willing to volunteer to fill the “gap”. And the permanent representative of Russia to NATO Alexander Grushko, commenting on the events, accused the Alliance to further build-up of military activity in the regions that affect Russian interests.
In February it was reported that NATO troops, numbering from 500 to 1,000 military, can send to Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Romania and Bulgaria. Most of the troops will be made up of military from the US, UK and Germany. At the moment, NATO is discussing the possibility of increasing activity in the Black sea, Washington promised to continue strengthening the Eastern flank of NATO.
In addition, it is already known that at the NATO summit in Warsaw on 8-9 July will be assigned the additional deployment on the Eastern borders of the Alliance on a rotational basis of four multinational battalions. Observers noted that such a large concentration of enemy troops near the Russian borders was not since the invasion of Nazi Germany in 1941.
In the beginning of the year, Rivas has written an article on the objectives of the government in 2016. Among other things he called “very important” to summer at the NATO summit took the decision on the permanent presence of allies in Estonia and neighbouring countries”. “It would have served as a clear signal that NATO should not quarrel because we have a principle “one for all and all for one,” wrote Rivas.
In April, Russian foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov in an interview with the Swedish newspaper Dagens Nyheter noted that Russia is interested in NATO, “why would they want to take the Baltic States”. “We were told that they (the Baltic countries) has survived all sorts of phobias since the Soviet times and during the First world war, when it all began. The Alliance expressed its understanding that modern Russia (for the Baltic countries) does not pose any threat, but they have, they say, psychology is this: they will be in NATO, and they will calm down, everything will be peaceful, constructive and will only help to develop good relations,” said Lavrov.
According to him, after the accession of the Baltic countries into NATO “no it’s not calming down”.
“Decisive steps Russia are the Baltic States shock
The expert of Association of military political scientists, associate Professor of political science and sociology REU named after Plekhanov Alexander Perendzhiev convinced that the logic of the statements Rõivas is pissed Estonia and the Baltic States as a whole from the fact that Russia not afraid of NATO. “This is a key point. Whatever is happening, including incidents with the “Donald cook”, Russia has shown that rigidly and adequately provides an answer without constraint. Such bold moves make the Baltic States a shock,” said Perendzhiev the newspaper VIEW.
The expert is convinced that the statement was made shortly before the NATO summit, with the aim that in Warsaw was made the immediate decision how to intimidate Russia. “The Baltic States believes that it will receive its geopolitical dividends as being at the forefront. The Baltic States shows that he does not want and does not want to improve relations between Russia and NATO,” – said the expert.
Such statements Baltic countries Perendzhiev relates to the fact that there is a fear of normalising relations between NATO and Russia. “For them it is the worst. In the case that the situation will change, their role will be reduced to zero. And now they raise the role of its States to the heavens,” – said the expert.
Perendzhiev considers that such ideas will not support Germany, France, Spain, UK and other older members of the Alliance. He recalled a recent statement by foreign Minister of Germany Frank-Walter Steinmeier that Russia need to engage in dialogue. Before Steinmeier stressed the need “to reduce tension and to return to the atmosphere of trust between NATO and Russia.”
However, Germany is currently developing a new security strategy, a new White paper,” which States that Russia in the foreseeable future will continue to pose “a threat to the security of our continent, if not radically change its political course. According to Deutsche Welle, at the same time, the authors recognize that without a reliable partnership with Russia security and prosperity in Europe will not, therefore, the policy towards Russia should be based on “right combination” of deterrence and proposals for cooperation.
In the current “White book” Russia called “priority partner” with whom it is necessary to develop close cooperation in the framework of the European Union and NATO.
“Neither of which bullying is not mentioned. On the contrary, said that to prevent the escalation of the situation, which may lead to undesirable consequences first of all for Europe. Any escalation of the conflict could end in a real armed conflict with the use of real military force,” Perendzhiev considers.
According to him, is now in Western countries began to change public opinion about Russia. “Gradually there is a wave of resistance to the anti-Russian rhetoric. More and more it is spoken about absence of the Russian threat. Public opinion is changing, there are relevant newspaper articles in the United States, Germany, France. The Baltic States could take very good place in terms of cooperation with Russia, the development of the economy. But somehow, before their muddled heads do not realize that from the discharge, they just lose. Russia will continue to cooperate with Germany, France, Britain, Spain, and the Baltic States will be out of this cooperation”, – summed up Alexander Perendzhiev.Related posts:
