The module is a beam of cylindrical shape weighs just 1360 kg with a length of 4 m to 3.2 m in diameter. He’s already docked to the module Tranquility (tranquility) of the American segment of the station. The advantage of inflatable modules is very cheap, shipping them to orbit, because they fly there in folded form, greatly saving booster.

Currently, the ISS consists of 14 modules: the Russian Zarya, Zvezda, Pirs, Poisk, Rassvet, American — unity, destiny, Quest, “tranquility”, “Dome”, “Leonardo”, “Harmony”, the European “Columbus” and the Japanese “Kibo”. The new beam will be 15-th under the account the first time will be used by astronauts as a warehouse. However, the developers plan to build residential zones and in such modules. For example, new inflatable cylinder members of the American crew of the ISS are planning to visit on 2 June.

Russia is also developing technology for creating inflatable modules. A prototype has already been created in the Rocket and space Corporation “Energia”. Unlike our American has a more spherical shape.

The volume of our “ball” is 100 cubic meters, accounting for ¼ of the volume of all stations. The module consists of a Central rigid compartment and the events around him transformed containment from a special strong fabric. This unique composite material that is not penetrated by micrometeorites. The researchers tested this using aluminum particles with a diameter of 11.5 mm flying at a speed of about 7 km per second.
