Gorbachev defended Putin, risking their own lives

Mikhail Gorbachev defended Putin in the pages of a British tabloid. He said that in the case of Crimea would have done exactly the same, as did the President of Russia, that is attached to it based on the will of the citizens of the Peninsula. The cooling of relations between the West and Russia Gorbachev blames not the Crimean spring, and arrogance of Washington. “They were never genuinely interested in helping Russia become a stable and strong democracy.”

Such a statement demanded that the last President of the Soviet Union a certain amount of courage, it can be literally associated with risk for life. Because as we know, Mikhail Sergeyevich, health care is provided in the West. And for these words it can make in the sanctions lists and cut off from Western medicine. How likely is such a development?

– I was very surprised by this interview of Gorbachev, there are startling statements, I did not expect, – said the “MK” head of the International Institute of political expertise Yevgeny Minchenko.Mikhail Gorbachev for a long time led the Pro-Western rhetoric, he was highly critical of Putin’s policies. And suddenly – such solidarity with Putin. For me it is inexplicable turn.

– Gorbachev may suffer for such statements to fall under Western sanctions?

– A good question. Hypothetically it can appear on any sanction lists. Although so many years he was the darling of the Western public, its anniversary was celebrated in London, so this development is hard to believe. I think it will first try to understand what is meant Gorbachev and the tabloid correctly interpreted his words. It is a mysterious story. And I have some doubts about the fact that he said all this. This is very much at odds with those statements that Mikhail Sergeyevich did before.
