Ancient tools found by archaeologists in the excavations on the territory of Florida, has allowed scientists to assume that people first inhabited the American continent for half a millennia earlier than thought until now. About US the traces of a previously unknown civilization, experts said on the pages of the scientific journal Science Advances.
Processed mammoth ivory and tools intended for the butchering of animal carcasses, as well as some other stone tools, specialists found in sinkholes with a depth of 8 meters at the bottom of the river Otilla in the course of archaeological works conducted in the area in the 80-ies — 90-ies of the last century. Close attention to these items was given much later, and their study helped to clarify that the age of the tools is approximately 14 550 years. Representatives of the oldest known to date, American cultures, Clovis, lived in North America about 13-13,2 thousand years ago. Thus, the finding refers to even more ancient civilization, nor any information about which scientists were not.
Experts say that, judging by the items discovered, the ancient inhabitants of America possessed a set of skills necessary for survival and prosperity, they knew how to look for game, fresh water and materials suitable for the manufacture of tools, and these tools were able to produce. The Tusk of the mammoth, according to scientists, is also an indication that humans and megafauna coexisted in America for several millennia.
By the way, this is not the first case when the remains of a mammoth help scientists to clarify the date of appearance of people in different parts of the planet. For example, last year, studying the bones discovered in the Arctic, the mammoth was named Zhenya, a group of Russian scientists came to the conclusion that in the distant past he was attacked by hunters. This, in turn, allows to claim that these people lived in the Arctic 45 thousand years ago, that is at least 10 thousand years earlier than was assumed before.Related posts:
